Baby Names

Double barrelled names

So two of the name choices I'm favoring are Anna Sophia and Amelia Anne. Thing is, I'd like that to be the first name since I have a family name for the middle name that I don't want to use as a first name.

Would it be better as Anna-Sophia / Amelia-Anne?

Should I mush them together like Annasophia or Amelianne? Would doing it that way change the pronunciation?

Or should I do the kid a favor and pick something else?

Re: Double barrelled names

  • You mean you want Anne/Anna to be the first name?  Please don't smoosh them together.  It's a mouthful.  Can you pick one for this LO and save the other name if you have another girl?

  • I definitely want Anne/Anna in there since it's another family name (wrote about this in another post) but DH doesn't want either name by itself since he thinks it's too plain. He has agreed to using it in a combination but he's also vetoing the easy combinations (Marianne, Julianna, etc.) He and I like the above combinations but I'm worried they might be too long.

We already have another name picked as middle name, so using as a middle name wouldn't work. And this is probably our last baby :(

  • I really don't like double names, but I dislike smoosh names even more. If you must use them both, just make them separate.

  • Love love love Amelia Anne!!!

  • I think if you want a double first name, the hyphen is a good solution. The hyphen makes it obvious that it is all one name but maintains the pronunciation integrity of each part individually. I know an Anna-Marie and I've always loved her name.

  • I think double names are adorable (definitely a southern trend) and Amelia-Ann was on our list for a while - so cute!! I would definitely hyphenate it though. Smoosh names seem a lot more made up. One of my best friends is named Marialice (Mary Alice) and no one ever spells her name right.

  • I love Amelia Ann/Anne!!
  • How about combined Anna names that are more common? Annalise is a popular name; Annemarie . . . that sort of thing? Also, you can have two middle names if you want, that might be less confusing?

  • I would not smoosh them together. I think both names are beautful, although I prefer Amelia Anne.

  • Annasophia? Amelianne? No

You can call her by her FN & MN but there is no need to smoosh them. If DH can't get over Anna/Anne being boring then I think you need to find a different name. I think if you name her Amelia Anne & call her by her full name it'll be pretty. I vote for Amelia Anne.

  • Where I live it's not unusual to do hyphenated names with relatively simple names. I know an Anna-Sophia (here Anna is pronounced ah-nuh), an Anna-Marie, and an Eva-Marie. I like Anna-Sophia, personally, but I would definitely not smoosh them.

  • Definitely do not smoosh them together, I don't like how that looks at all.  I prefer Anna Sophia, either as two separate words or hyphenated.  I used to love the name Anna Grace.
  • Two separate names, not smooshed and no hyphen. I'm Southern and know quite a few people with double names--never seems to be an issue. I think smooshing or adding punctuation makes it more difficult.

  • I love double names. I'd leave them separate though. You just create a jumbled mess when you smoosh them together.

  • Two first names is fine as are two middle names. Just please don't hyphenate or smoosh.

You can name her Anna Sophia familyname lastname and call her Anna or Anna Sophia. Plus, it gives her options when she is older. Be prepared though, even if you call her Anna Sophia, people will still call her just Anna.

I know an Anne Claire and even knowing she prefers her full name and hates just being called Anne, it is still hard for me not to call her just Anne sometimes.  We are a nation of lazy people and like to say the shortest name possible, I think. :)

  • Definitely no hyphens. I've never seen anyone in the south add a hyphen! I'm almost appalled by the thought! ;P

Seriously, no hyphens! How hard can it be to say "I go by Amelia Anne."?!

  • I actually knew an Annasophia once. I also knew a Mary Claire. And many Annemaries, and a Maryrose. I wouldn't smoosh AmeliaAnn. She MAY just want to go by Amelia or a nn someday.

  • It's NMS but I know an Anna Sophia who goes by both names, and Mary Kathleen as well. I don't think you need to hyphenate or smoosh them together, just introduce her as Anna Sophia and people will do what you do.

  • I'm hyphened, and I actually love it. Plenty of people just call me by my first name, but I still have a lot that call me by my full name. I don't have another middle name after it, so it's not annoying-ly long.

    I love Amelia-Anne though.

  • Please don't mush them together. Those are very pretty names. Can you do two middle names? One Sophia or Anne, the other the family name? I konw a few people with two middle names for a reason like this.

  • I say give her one first name and two middle names.  I think two first names are a pain for paperwork and just plain saying.  She can always go by two names, which ever you choose,  but I think it's easier to go FIRST, MIDDLE, MIDDLE, LAST.
