Tummy-time haters & Crawling

Hey,

I am lurking from the 3-6m boards.  DD hates tummy time (always has).  She starts whinning/ fussing/ and sometimes crying to get off her tummy after a few minutes.  She has great leg strength - but very weak arms.  I fear this may slow-down her eagerness to learn to crawl.

If you have a LO that hates (or hated) tummy time, did LO learn to crawl at a similar time as their age-mates?  How did you get LO interested in  saying on tummy long enough to figure it out?  (We have tried propping her up on boppy, rolled towels, lots and lots of toys, laying in front, making silly faces & noises, etc.)

Thanks!

Re: Tummy-time haters & Crawling

  • My LO hated tummy time and started getting up on her hands and knees a couple weeks ago and is scooting everywhere and attempting to crawl now.  She also can pull herself up on low things.  We didn't do anything special.  She figured it out on her own.  Don't worry about it!

  • My LO hated tummy time, until he became good at rolling over. Now that he can roll there himself he never lays on his back at all. He can get up on his hands and knees and is kind of inch worming around.

I wouldn't worry about, you're LO will want that mobility soon enough and will head to the tummy if that's what it takes.

  • DS hated tummy time literally until the day he learned to scoot on his belly. He started doing this right at 7 months.

  • Thanks!  I know you aren't supposed to compare babies - but my cousin-in-law's DD is 3 weeks older than my DD.  She is already up on hands and knees.  We are no where near that.  Its nice to get reassurance that LOs will figure it out in their own time.
  • J hated tummy time and had to grow into it on his own. Nothing we did made him like it. He started crawling last week which seems late on these boards but is completely normal.
  • In my experience, TT does not necessarily correlate to crawling.  My daughter is fine with TT and hasn't made the slightest effort to crawl ... none ... zip.  I'm starting to think that if she did not like TT, she would be motivated to move.  She likes TT, to sit and stand ... rolling not so much, crawling not at all.  Here's to our lovely LOs who do it all different ways!

  • Crawling is not a milestone.  Many kiddos don't ever crawl.  Of all things, don't worry about crawling and enjoy your free time!!  Trust me, you'll be wondering why you ever worried.

BTW: DD#2 hates tummy time and is not crawling.  She's not really even trying.  Praise the lord! LOL
