Give me your m/s remedies, STAT

I'm 6 weeks, and the m/s (or rather all day sickness) had been kicking my butt for the past two weeks. I haven't thrown up, but I literally gag and dry heave almost all day long. I had mild m/s with DS from 6.5-12 weeks, but nothing like this. I've tried frequent small meals, ginger ale, and preggie pops, and no relief. Some days its hard to function at work all day because of it.

I'm going to ask at my first prenatal appointment on Tuesday, but has anyone found any m/s remedies that actually work?

I've also come to the conclusion that it was probably a man that coined the term morning sickness, because it should really be called day sickness.

When I was younger I used to get car sick and the only thing that helped me with crystalized ginger. Also chewing mint gum wasn't too bad....

If you can't function maybe your doctor can give you some zofran. Feel better! :(

  • I keep a small tin of mints in my car and in my desk at work and when it starts hitting my I go for one of those and just suck on it for a while.

  • I had m/s from about week 5-12, I found ginger ale, saltines, hard candy worked.  I had to make sure I didn't let my stomach get too empty or else I was in real trouble.  I left a pack of saltines on my desk and munched on those.  GL and I hope it passes soon!!

  • I had that with my first, and I ate a lot of starchy snacks (pretzels, goldfish) and ginger ale.  I agree, making sure my stomach never got too empty helped a lot too.  Good luck!

  • Try unisom. My doctor gave me the okay to take it - it's a sleep aid, but something in it helps. When my m/s hit I was stuck in bed all day for 3 days because I couldn't move without throwing up. I started taking unisom and it has worked wonders!

  • Ginger Chews (a really strong ginger candy with a chewy texture) or crystalized ginger.  Mint tea.  Cheddar bunnies (kind of like goldfish).  Greek yogurt with honey.  Brown rice with chicken broth.  A cool shower or bath.  Sparkling water (like Pellegrino), especially with lime or lemon.  Ginger Altoids.  Yoga breathing.  And when all else fails, take a Zofran.

I was sick like that my entire last pregnancy--I know how you feel.  It sucks--hang in there!

  • Try eating any kind of bean. For some reason it really works. Also, I keep cheerios on my nightstand. I munch on them in the middle of the night and before I get out of bed in the morning.  It really helps me not throw up in the mornings if I have a little something in there. Good luck, I know it's so miserable:(
  • I second the Unisom suggestion.

My OB recommends 1/2 tab in the morning, 1/2 tab in the afternoon, and 1 tab at bedtime. I'll warn you that you will exchange the constant nausea for sheer exhaustion for a few days until you get used to the side effects, but most of the prescription meds have the same effects.

I hope you find some relief soon!

  • I keep lemon drops / lemonheads with me to suck on if m/s hits when I'm out and about.  Also even though ginger ale works for me for regular sickness, for m/s I find that Sprite or Sierra Mist work better. Also lemonade. It's all about that sour citrus taste.

Play to your cravings. Last time I ate saltines and cinnamon toast when I felt sick (cinnamon helped a lot for some reason), but this pregnancy I can't even think about eating starches and spices make me feel worse. But I've had red meat cravings and usually after I've had some the m/s feels better for a few hours. Maybe whatever you're craving might be the thing to make you feel better.

Also fruit, fruit. Strawberries, grapes, green apples, those little fruit cups, all are pretty portable and you can munch on at work.

    Hope you feel better.

  • I read on here somewhere, maybe in a past post on here, or one of the BMB's that the answer to morning sickness is protein. I have not had the experience to try it, but it can't hurt.
