Trouble with ultrasounds?

Hi ladies I was wondering if this has happened to any of you....

The past 2 ultrasounds that I've had ( 21 wks and  24 wks) I've nearly fainted after about 10-15 minutes of laying on my back on the U/S table. I never had any problems with my DD at any point in my pregnancy, so this is baffling to me.

The U/S tech and Dr. say it's bc the babies are compressing my vena cava, therefore  restricting blood flow. I'm thinking its not necessarily the weight of the babies (at this point) but perhaps the fact that since there are 2 they are covering more width in my belly (I hope that makes sense.... :/) when I lay down and putting pressure on my vena cava which is more towards your left side of the body.

The tech is so nice and always says to let her know if I need to sit up, however I'm going back next week for another U/S and I was just going to ask if I can sit up the entire time.

If this has happened to any of you, please let me know if any positions worked.

TIA! :)

Re: Trouble with ultrasounds?

  • ironically this JUST happened to me this week..i was lying there and all of a sudden i was telling the tech i needed to sit up!!    she finished with me sitting up and i think when i go again she said i will either sit up or lie on my life side ....

it freaked me out but she said it's quite common!

  • This happened to me a few times and they would actually let me lay on my side :)
  • Yes!  I had the worst time with this.  I usually ended up only being able to watch one baby because I had to stay on my left side.  One time they put a few pillows under my back and it helped a little.  I always tried to hold out until I thought I was going to die.  :)

  • I had a few entire ultrasounds done while laying on my side. It did help me, so hopefully that works for you too.

  • Happened to me too, but only with my twin pregnancy. Definitely normal. I also laid on my side, which helped, but only for so long. Eventually, I would have to sit up and take a break.

  • This happened to me at most ultrasounds, and I felt nauseous often too. I would just lay on my side which helped. And sometimes I just needed to stop, sit up, take a breath.
