1st Trimester

flying ok or not? i am seeing different viewpoints

I inititally thought that flying in first tri was fine, it was later in third tri that might be an issue.

However, i do understand that there are some circumstances in which you shouldnt fly in first tri (ie any complications, any cardiovascular issues and/or possibly even anemia).

I want to book a flight for the last week of march which would make me 9wks. I forgot to ask my doc of course and hes not in till tues. im afraid the prices are going to jump up the closer i get. I will ask his opinion anyways, but does anyone have direct advice from their ob on this?

Thanks!

  • My sister has a 1 year old. Her doctor told her she could fly until pretty late in her pregnancy.  She did and my nephew came out perfectly.

  • I was told it was fine up until 36 wks. That's my mw's opinion as long as your pregnancy is smooth and you feel ok.

The biggest first tri issue is usually morning sickness if you have it and a lot of people tend to opt out of the scanning machines and just get the pat down. Personal decision.

I flew at 12 wks, somewhere in the 20ish wks and 35 wks with DD.

Thats part of whats holding me back too. i had my first appt and everything seems ok so far, but i havent had an ultrasound yet (not until the 14th) or any blood work. so its hard to say whether or not any issues. I have had a little ms here and there but nothing major, though im not at what seems to be the magic 6wk ms mark either!

  • I will be flying at 9 weeks. It's a 3 hour flight that I've made many times before and I have an aisle seat.
  • My OB said flying was perfectly fine up until 34 weeks.

I travel for work. I stopped flying at 30 weeks with my first. When I fly now, I just be sure to eat before, bring crackers and water.

  • I flew at 11 weeks with my first pregnancy and we're jetting off next week this time around. No problems. It is fine. Just make sure you walk around a lot so that you don't get a lot of swelling in your feet, etc.

  • I'm taking an 11 hour flight tonight. I'll let you know how it goes!

  • Yep! Everything I've read says the main reason you should avoid flying is because you may be going into labor soon.  Apparently, some airlines even have POLICIES saying you cannot fly past a certain week just in case.

I just flew home to see my parents this weekend and let me tell you, it was rough.  I've never had problems with motion sickness but boy was I holding tight onto that air sick bag!! I kept it together but it was very hard!

  • I flew at 27 weeks in my last pregnancy, and I just returned from vacation last night and I am 11 weeks.  Doc said it's perfectly fine up until 32 weeks for me.

I had really bad morning sickness with this LO and was worried, but I did okay.  I took a pack of saltines with me and made sure I had sick bags at my seat, but I did ok.  We had some turbulence on the flight back and it did make me really nauseous, but I was able to just breathe through it and chew some gum until we landed, and just sit for a few while everyone exited the plan and then i felt a bit better and was able to leave.  Just tell the stewardess and they are usually really good to get you anything you need or check in with you.

Unless you've been spotting, threatened miscarriage, etc., then you'd be considered low risk at this point. Most complications (pre-e, GD, etc.) occur much later in pregnancy, possibly limiting travel after 20+ wks or something.

Can you just pay for trip insurance or refundable tickets?

  • You can travel safely as long as you don't have any sort of complications up until 32-36 weeks.

  • I was a flight attendant while pregnant with DS.  I flew to Europe and the middle east.  I had ms bad one flight (it was pretty turbulent too) and it sucked but I was on a 8 hour flight.  I'm assuming your flight won't be that long so even if your sick you "should" sayin. I say book it you'll be fine just get yor medical records from ur doc. before you leave just incase you have any problems away from home.

  • I flew when I was 34 weeks pregnant and a lot before then (I travel for work).  I've never had an issue.

You're not supposed to fly beyond 34-35 weeks because they're afraid you'll go into labor on the plane.

  • I flew at 5 weeks pregnant and everything was perfectly fine.  My doctor said there was no issue with flying.  I also flew at 18 weeks and it was fine but I was a little uncomfortable during the flight, mostly just back pain and no leg room to stretch out.  I am flying again and I am 23 weeks.  It is fine, but my doctor says to get up and stretch your legs every 30 minutes or so (so you don't get clots), and stay well hydrated.  But if you are a high risk pregnancy, you should definitely check with your doctor before flying.  If you are worried, you should ask your doctor.

  • You can definitely fly early on.  You may want to bring proof of pregnancy to the airport though so you can avoid the radiation from the TSA line.  I was lucky and since I was traveling with my son, they had us skip it without proof of pregnancy.
