What is your biggest phobia?

I was just writing something about living in Texas and thinking about the main thing I am not looking forward to dealing with when we move....Crickets. I have never had a true phobia of anything in my life until we lived in Texas before and I discovered the horrible crickets. They are EVERYWHERE. On more than one occasion I got to work and an entire side of our building was covered in them! SO SO GROSS. I hate that they jump around and you don't know where they're going to end up...it's just disgusting.

So just wondering....what is your phobia and why?

  • I'm scared of snakes. I screamed when I got startled by a garden snake in our yard. I'm also freaked out by jellyfish. I would not do well on Fear Factor. I'm finally okay with mice since doing research with them.

This happened to me when I went to visit family in Kansas. Except I don't know if they were crickets or grasshoppers. I forgot but either way.. I was terrified to go outside!!!

Mine is the dentist. Although a bumpie a long time ago suggested that I try 1-800 Dentist and I did and found a wonderful practice in my area that specialize with dental phobias. I am forever grateful. I wish I can remember who that was.... I would give her a big fat virtual kiss!

  • Enclosed spaces. Like really small enclosed spaces. I had a very hard time when I had an MRI once that lasted over and hour. I am sure the tech was laughing at all the whimpers and sobs coming out of me...but hey, I made it!

I am especially phobic if there are a lot of people in small spaces. Elevators aren't so bad (unless they are noisy and old), but an elevator full of people has me standing with my nose practically to the door waiting for it to open. And Crowds suck.

  • I have a fear of drowning, which is odd because I know how to swim.  I guess it's more like getting trapped underwater (e.g. ice, car falling off a bridge).  It's gotten worse now that I have kids (how will I save THEM?!)  I know it's completely irrational.

  • Spiders.  All spiders.  Large and small.  I have had near accidents because of them.  I have not slept in a room for days after spotting one.  I will freak the eff out over larger, hairier spiders but even small ones do me in.  I think it goes back to when I was a kid and got bit and my eye was swollen shut for a few days.  You should have seen me trying to watch the movie Arachnaphobia when it came out.  Kinda hard to watch a movie between your fingers.

  • I'm afraid of the dark. I'm not afraid to sleep in a dark room.  I hate walking around or being somewhere other than my bedroom in the dark.  Creeps me out!

  • I don't know if it would be consider a phobia, but more of a paranoia of Natural disasters... Volcanoes, flooding... I would love to see a tornado though...

This, exactly. I was on the swim team in high school and was a lifeguard, but drowning is a HUGE fear of mine. Pretty much any situation where you wouldn't be able to breathe, drowning, being buried alive, fire/smoke, all scare the crap out of me. If I think about it too much I will have a panic attack.

  • needles.  that's why i had homebirths with my kids, so i could avoid having an IV.

my mom tells me that my fear stems from when i was a little kid and had to have blood taken all the time because i was anemic.  i don't remember that at all, just that i've always been terrified of needles.

  • definitely agree to clowns and mimes...they scare me big time!

I'm also not the best flyer...I'll do it, but it requires lots of alcohol or sedatives!

  • Moths!  I guess rationally I am not afraid of them...but if one is near me I have a real physiological response. My heart rate goes up and I start sweating. I have no idea what my problem is.

Go to Austin and San Antonio. They're everywhere and it's gross. Especially in the summer and near water. Yuck yuck yuck.

I too am terrified of natural disasters, but I wasn't really counting that as a phobia I guess. Growing up in the NW and dealing with the E words....I just don't even like to think of it. When I lived in Kansas that T word siren scared the daylights out of me too.

  • I am surprised to see so many mamas that share my weather phobia!

I am petrified of lightning.  Like a paralyzing fear.  I am convinced I will get struck by it if I am out in a storm.  I am amazed when I see people walking in a storm with no sense of panic and urgency.  DH thinks I am loco, as do most of my friends.

I have never been in a tornado but F that.  When I hear Tornado warning I swear my throat starts to close.  I think I would die of a heart attack if I ever saw a funnel cloud.  I don't even like wind b/c I am afraid a tree branch is going to fall and land on me.  I have issues.  I know.  But you asked Wink

I have a fear of germs, clutter, DH dying, and small spaces with lots of people....just to name a few...but none of these are as irrational or paralyzing as a thunder storm warning.  I'm not as crazy as I sound...swear!

I'm afraid of the dark.  When I lived alone I'd have to sleep with all the lights on, now that my husband is in the house I can handle just having nightlights.

  • Feel free to laugh at me if you want, but in any respect aside from my former job as a call center agent, I cannot use the telephone for phone calls. I only answer calls from DH, my MIL, and my immediate family. Anyone and everyone else gets sent to voicemail. Which I don't even have to call to check, because I get my voicemail messages transcribed and sent as texts.

Don't even get me started on MAKING phone calls. I will put it off as long as possible, because I get sweaty, I can't breathe, my fingers tingle, and I get nauseous, sometimes to the point of vomiting.

I have NO idea how or why I'm able to get past this to do my job. Maybe because there's no personal aspect to it? Even then, I still dreaded calling other departments. I always prayed there was more than a 2 minute wait, because then we could "cold drop" the call, without introducing the customer to the next agent.

  • Ladybugs, always have been and always will be!

I know it sounds ridiculous, but I seriously freak out. I will run away from them and cry hysterically. If one is in our house, I will run out and yell for DH to kill it. If he can't find it, then I find somewhere else to sleep.

Everyone makes fun of me for it, but I can't get over it. That is one of the main reasons I want to move. I'd rather deal with scorpions, spiders, bears, etc...

I'm the same way. And I worked in a call center. I answer the phone if it's my family (immediate only) my DH, or my closest friends...otherwise I can't. Outbound calls are the worst though. Forget it.

  • Mice! I posted about the mouse in my car last week.  I actually have no real reason it's just crazy.  I had to stop and trade cars with DH yesterday because Savannah scratching on her seat belt and shrieking just about made me jump out of my skin because I am so stinking paranoid!!

Oh, we get them. Some years are worse than others. They're disgusting!  Cover entire walls, fly around lights at night. I swear crickets couldn't fly when I was a kid. And then they die and stink!!  Blech!! Rotting cricket carcus times 1000 dead crickets?  It's way up there in the gross factor.

Then there are years where we have not a single cricket.

    It's not a phobia, but I'm not a fan.

  • I am terrified of death. Like to the extreme, can not discuss it, think of it all the time, cry about it very randomly out of no where.  I know mine goes far beyond a phobia. Now in relation to death, I have a phobia of drowning and enclosed spaces or not being able to move. I freak out if I get tangled in the sheets and can not move.

  • Ok.  This is really weird, but I am terrified of corn muffins.

I got really sick when I was about 10 and the last thing I ate was a giant corn muffin.  Since then I have had nightmares that I am being chased by them.

    I can't stand even Thomas's Toaster Cakes.

I think next to see someone on Jenny Jones when I was a kid that was afraid of buttons (like on shirts etc) this is probably the most different thing I've heard. Valid of course, just different. I'm sorry for you because they're yummy.

  • I don't know if this qualifies as a phobia, but I HATE feet. Hate them. Baby feet do not bother me of course.

When DH and I first moved in together, if his feet would rub up against my leg or something while in bed I would get up and wash my leg. Toenails make me gag.

Needless to say at work when I'm having to do DVT ultrasound studies on nasty patients I try to keep the foot covered otherwise I might vomit

That's so weird!  I thought I was the only freak!  I don't even like ordering pizza and when I met Jeff my job was to take pizza orders!  It drives Jeff insane. I think a large part of the reason I lose my friends is that I have an irrational fear of phoning them...I have no clue where it stems from but I know that at my parents house nobody answers the phone either.
