Moms who already have girls-- dresses

I was once talking to a mom and commented on how cute the dress her LO was wearing.  And she told me that dresses are a huge PITA in the 6-12 month age range because it's hard to crawl with them on.  So while cute to look at, they barely used any of theirs because of this.  True/Not True?

  • I would say true depending on the length, right below the diaper not as bad as down to knees or longer.

My DD only wore special occasion/holiday dresses.  Other than that was in pants/onesies.

  • True! My DD didn't walk until 16 months. I didn't want anything slowing down her progress so she only wore them on special occassions. Now she wears them regularly.

  • Yeah, that's true. Crawling is much more difficult for them when they're wearing dresses (long enough to drag on the ground when they're on all 4s) b/c their knees get caught up. But if wearing dresses is just an occasional thing, then it's not a big deal.

  • I used very short dresses with bloomers or leggings.  I dressed her in this for special occassions, but also in summer when the heat and humidity in DC become almost unbearable.  The short dresses are definitely better as they drag less.

  • I guess it depends on your LO but in my case, DD was a "bum scooter" starting at 9 months so it wasn't any different if she was wearing a dress with tights/leggings or pants..

  • TRUE.

DD only wore dresses to church or for special occasions.  We opted for the ruffled onesies/rompers with matching baby legs during her crawling stages.  Some of them looked like dresses/skorts, so those ones worked great for more "dressy-type" occasions while still being practical.

  • Okay, special occasion only then. I have seen so many cute everyday dresses, but I'll just skip over those for now.  DS also didn't walk until 17 months, so I'll just try really really hard to resist until this LO walks.  Then the dress buying will be on for sure!   Thanks everyone.

  • I have to say that while I was sad about not being able to go dress crazy for a while, I love the ideas of the ruffled bloomers and onesies with babylegs.  I loved babylegs for DS and now I have a reason to go girly babyleg crazy.  Thanks!

  • True.  I never use to put DD in dresses unless it was a holiday.

  • Very true. But once she started walking she lived in them. Love sun dresses for style & convenience!!

  • Fairly true but not a huge issue. When DD would crawl I would just tuck her dress in her bloomers. No biggie. I also bought a lot of pretty bubbles in the same patterns as some dresses. Easier for crawling and still cute.
  • I never had an issue with dresses and crawling with DD. She lived in dresses her first summer, then by fall/winter I was just pairing long sleeved dresses with Babylegs.  She was always able to get around without a problem.  I plan to do the same thing with this LO if it's a girl. I just love the Carter's play dresses. They're so cute!

  • I agree.  I also thought t-shirts were a PIA until DD was 12 or 18 months old because we were always carrying her and they were always coming up.  Onesies and one-piece outfits were great at that age.

  • Even though crawling was a challenge, I still loved dressing DD in dresses with leggings.  When she was moving around, I just tucked the dress in her pants so they weren't in her way...

I agree with the PP who said t-shirst were a pain...DD was almost always in a dress or a onesie...never ts that would creep up and leave her belly bare.

  • I never had this issue with DD but I guess it makes sense that it could be an issue.

  • When one of my sisters learned to crawl, it was a Sunday and we'd been at church, so she was in a dress.  She figured it out around the dress - one knee and one foot!  She looked kinda like Mowgli from the Jungle Book.

This.  DD wore a ton of little sun dresses because they were cool.  We just tucked um.

  • True for us. They do have some "dresses" that seem more like long shirts that would be ok, but we just avoided dresses for the most part since DH hated trying to buckle the car seat with them in his way.

  • Definitely true. Tucking the back of her dress (after bunching it all together) into the back of her diaper could be an option, but then it could get um, messy. And wrinkled. My daughter started walking at 10.5 months, but I only put her in dresses for special occasions.

What about bubbles, rompers or ruffled diaper covers paired with a cute top?
