Do you give LO's water? How much?

My LO is a little younger than the other July babies and just started eating solids regularly a few weeks ago.  I was thinking about tihs today, I don't really give her water.  I'm wondering if I should start giving it to her regularly and was curious how much all of your LO's drink.  She is EBF and she eats purees and cereal right now twice a day.  Thanks.

  • I've only given DD water twice? Once only because she wouldn't take her milk...so curious (I knew it was time to eat) I gave her water and she chugged 2oz. I did this out of curiosity lol. Recently I've been giving her prune/apple juice to help her bowel movements as they've become a little on the harder side.

But other than that, not sure on how  much or if we even have to since they add no nutritional value like milk does.

  • Our pedi said it was okay to offer water in a sippy cup just to get DD used to the water and the cup. I offer it to her a few times a day, but she plays with it more than she actually "drinks" from it. :) Pedi also said, if LO likes water, no more than a couple ounces a day.

  • My pedi said to offer around 2oz a day. I always give him some with his purees, but he rarely drinks 2oz.

  • Nick loves his water just like his mommy :)

    Actually both kids like water.

But I have no idea how much he drinks/

  • I was just offering it as a novelty because she was always trying to get at my cup. Now I offer her a sippy cup or I help her with a real cup of water after every solids meal. She usually takes 3 or 4 gulps, then is done.

  • I offer dd a sippy cup of water at each table food meal she eats.  So she gets water three times a day but she usually only takes a few sips at each meal.

  • DS eats 3 solid meals a day.  At lunch and dinner I give him a sippy with water.  He usually on gets a ounce or so a day.  Sometimes a little more.

  • I give Saoirse water in a sippy cup just for fun. I want her to be able to drink out of a cup by her first birthday so I can just give her cow's milk in a cup rather than formula in a bottle. It will just make my life easier when the new baby comes. That being said, it's just a goal and might not happen that fast. She likes the sippy cup but hasn't really figured out how it works yet. She actually didn't like the taste of the water at first, but she's used to it now. I offer the water in a cup after her dinner every night. She just plays with it for now and I try to show her how it works. No pressure, but I figure it's okay to start at least.

  • I've read to give water with solids to prevent constipation. I give LO a sippy cup of water each time I offer solids. He mostly just chews on the spout, but definitely drinks some.

  • We give 3-4 oz of water a day - warmed up with a splash of apple juice (he doesn't like it by itself). He gets constipated very easily, so water daily, prunes/pears/peaches every other day is a must for us. My pedi said if they really like water, you can give them up to 8oz/day.

  • We give DD an ounce or two at dinner if she hasn't had a poo that day.  We took her to swim class last weekend and I think she probably drank a gallon of pool water.  Fortunately it was a saline pool rather than chlorene, so there was less chemical.
