private support collectors

Anyone have experience (good/bad) with hiring a private company to collect child support on your behalf.  I know most retain 20-30% of any payment you get

Ex is $19000 in arrears and the state of Ohio is not exactly enforcing the order.  He went 3 years without making a payment and they did nothing.  He made a few payments and when I called when he stopped making payments and they said because he had made a payment they could not file contempt until he missed several months of payments in a row even though at that point he was 17000 behind.

I am on the fence about transferring the case from Ohio to Texas (where I live) or going with a private collection agency because I am tired of him getting out of his financial obligation to his child.

  • They don't do anything you can't do yourself.

    1.  It's over $5k in arrears it's now under Federal Enforcement laws

    2. You FAX the CS enforcement officer everyday every hour until they take your case seriously.  Same letter over and over stating how much is owed, when the last payment is and that you want all of his wages garnished you want a judgment for a lein against any property he may have, If need be you need a warrent for his obvious contempt for the Court Ordered CS.

    Phonecalls/voicemails are not documented.  Faxes though make people's lives miserable they will take care of you just to get you to stop.  They need to time stamp every faxed correspondence.  They have to put a copy in  your file.  then they have to place it into your enforcement officer's file and when the pile starts to build they have to start looping the supervisor to the enforcement officer in.

    3.  You can contact the state representative to see if they will take your case but since you're no longer a consitituant it would be harder for them to take up the cause.

  • ITA with Sweetie.  My xh was held in contempt once already, and just by keeping my support officer in the loop, having my lawyer involved in it also, and pushing, pushing, they accepted the case again.  You have to push and make a stand for them to take it seriously.

    Here in WA everything gets documented, phone calls, letters, faxes etc.  You can request certified copies of debt calculations, any correspondence between the CS officer and anything regarding your case.  I had to pay xx cents per page, but having that documentation can only help you.  Yes, some things are blacked out, such as xh personal information etc, but there's enough there to get what's going on.  This is also how I found out FOR SURE that his mom was making the payments for a while.  Blech.
