WWYD? Early Glucose test?

At my 12 week the OB (not mine) gave me a lab slip to do the 1 hr early, just because I was borderline with R. If I pass I still have to do it at 26 weeks. If I fail (I did pass my with R but they suspect I had it later) they will have caught it early and can treat accordingly.

I thought it was a fasting test, but I just called to ask and the desk lady said no, no prep for it. Is that correct?

Would you do it early or just self monitor? I have everything to test my BS, just need a new battery for the glucose monitor.

Re: WWYD? Early Glucose test?

  • My personal opinion - so take it for what it's worth, is that it should be a fasting test. Just by my observation - I swear that everyone that was told to fast has less of a "failure" rate than those that were told it was non-fasting.  My doctor's office told me to fast both times but the lab marked it as a non-fasting test.

  • I may be losing it, but I thought that was the test where you drink that nasty drink and then don't eat or drink anything for an hour?  no?  I would just do it, if they catch it early then like you said they can treat accordingly.

Yes, it is that...last time I did it first thing in the a.m and thought I fasted. Maybe not. I was going to go now, I ate a normal lunch and haven't had too much sugar today.

  • I did not fast either time and I passed both times. I thought that gd is something you only developed later in pregnancy though, so I guess I was wrong there.

This is what I think too.  I always spill sugar at every appointment, but passed both my one hours and the 3 hour they had me do with Jules as a precaution, and if I had ate, I bet I wouldn't have passed.  I would probably just do it now, but fast.

  • I didn't fast, but did eat a high protein/low carb breakfast beforehand (scrambled eggs and whole wheat toast).

When do you see your OB again? I'd ask him/her, if you feel you really trust their opinion. In the meantime, just be careful with your diet, and self-monitor if you feel it will help.

  • I did mine at 28 weeks and my OB told me specifically NOT to fast.  I passed.  I've never heard of anyone doing the test so early.

ETA my whole response since my computer freaked out on me! lol

Anyway, I was tested at 16 weeks with my first pregnancy because of family history. I tested positive and was sent for the 3 hr. I was over on the first two hours and borderline the third. Luckily diet was enough to keep it under control the whole pregnancy.

With my second pregnancy, and a different doctor, I wasn't tested until 28 weeks. And I failed. Luckily I was already following the diet from my first time. Again I controlled it with just diet.

My advice would be to follow the lab instructions. They do these tests all the time so I would assume they know the protocol. You could always call your dr just to check what they expected you to do. My thinking is that you don't want to try to "cheat" the test because if you do have GD it's really important to treat it as soon as possible, KWIM?
