Okay also what about South Padre?

Which is better if you're looking for family friendly, nice beaches, swimmable water - Port A or South Padre?

If it's South Padre, where do you stay there? Is there a specific good area?

  • From everything I've heard, it's SP all the way.  I've just never wanted to drive there and I hear it's considerably more expensive.  But 5 hours in the car is about my max, so that's really been the big kicker.  If you're used to 20+, then 8 probably wouldn't seem so bad!

Yeah for 8 hours I might not even break out the dvd player Stick out tongue

Ask me again after we do it with a newborn though. The first time we made the drive with Leo we did have one pretty rough stretch.

  • We get to SP in 6 hours, and I absolutely adore it. The water and beaches are as nice as many on the Gulf Coast of Florida. We usually stay at a motel, and they're not too pricey. You can always stay on the mainland for cheaper. There is a fun boat ride that takes you out to see dolphins, and they show kids all sorts of cool sea creatures. And Harlingen has the best Mexican and Tex-Mex I've had in Texas. If you go, let me know, and I'll find out the names of the restaurants we like from DH.

ETA: I just saw in your post below that you'd go for a week. SP also has a Schlitterbahn water park! So that would be a fun break for the kiddos.

WooHoo H-town rules! Wink (Grew up in Harlingen) But have to say Brownsville would have better Mexican food. Vermillions in Brownsville has some awesome ceviche. I can't offer much advice on family friendly things on SPI since my memories of there consist of Spring Break, Summer after Senior year with some kegs and trips to Matamoros.
  • If you need to break up the drive CC has a pretty nice aquarium you could get out of the car for a couple of hours before finishing the trip or stay the night in CC.
  • We go to SPI every year for NYE and we generally rent a house/condo (Jay's whole family goes).  We always like the Sun Tide 3, it's right on the beach, they have a heated pool indoor and a hot tub and then a big pool outdoors and then, obviously, the beach.  It's pretty great.

And I have always found the beach there to be quite clean and the water to be very swimmable.
