Moms of thumbsuckers...

Looking for tips! I did not care that Isabelle was a thumb sucker. I loved that she could and still can self sooth.

But now she is 18 months old and hardly speaking (at least in relation to her sister at the same age) and while I know age 2 is the age they really start working on speech, I want to try to get Izzy to consciencely not suck her thumb during the day. Kind of like a pacifier. She can have it in the car, in bed, at naptime. Weaning her off her thumb where most of the day is concerned is going to be interesting - since I cannot take it away.

Any ideas? Tips?

<No offense, but I do not care to here any criticism on why I should leave it alone, let her wean herself. Not an option for me. I want to help it along. What I am looking for is tips and advice and experience.>

Thanks!

Melanie

Re: Moms of thumbsuckers...

  • And just so you know - I am already mourning it. LOL. I love how cute she looks sucking her thumb. Its sweet and adorable and all my baby. She is so little still. I just know, from parenting experience, that I need to start now so that I do not have to deal with a 4 year old sucking her thumb in public. :)

  • Lynda still sucks her thumb but we have it only at bedtime or when she is really tired and holding her bunny.  Is it possible to have her start to associate it with a thing (kind of like a pacifier)?  Lynda will only suck her thumb when holding bunny.  It's her way of comforting herself when it's time to relax. Maybe if Izzy understands that it's okay to suck her thumb when she's holding it.  Bunny comes in the car with us sometimes, but never leaves the car (except big days like Disney).

*sigh* I wish I had more insight to offer, but I have no idea how I will ever get her to stop sucking her thumb because I don't think I can ever take bunny away.  I think she's going to walk down the aisle with bunny.
