Late evening naps...

DD usually has to take a nap right when I get home around 5:00pm because she is usually really tired. Sometimes she is so tired she won't wake up for her last feed of the day but just keeps sleeping even past bedtime. I debate on whether or not to wake her up and then put her back down when it is "bedtime." On some days I have woken her up and fed her one last time before bedtime, other times I've let her sleep as long as she wanted. Both have backfired on me. Most of the time when I decide to wake her up, she will be really upset until I put her back down for the night.

What do you do when LO needs a late evening nap? How long do you let them sleep? Do you just push bedtime back an hour or so?

  • We do baby-led sleeping, and don't wake DS if he falls asleep earlier than he usually does.  While he doesn't have a set "bedtime" he usually goes down for the night between 9-11.  If his nap runs into that, I just let him go, and he will still sleep pretty well.

  • We don't have a set bedtime. 'Bedtime' is always just about 2 hours after she wakes up from her evening nap because she almost always naps around 6-7pm.

  • Mine little guy usually naps around 5, right when we get home from work/daycare. I generally don't let him sleep past 6:30ish. Than eats and back down for the night around 8:15. He doesn't usually last more than two hours awake anyways so it sort of just fits into his "schedule." Hasn't back fired yet....

  • Our DS will usually take a late nap in the 8-9 range. We will wake him before bedtime, around 10 PM, to change his diaper and feed him one last time in the evening. He will then fall back asleep pretty easily and continue to sleep until 6 or 7 in the morning. This tends to work quite well for us.

  • Every once in a while she will need a later nap. Yesterday she was so cranky @ 7pm so we put her down and woke her about 30 minutes later and she was fine. I guess it was just enough sleep to make her happy and then we did normal "bed time" around 8:30.

  • Our LO always seems to need a nap at 4 or 5 pm too. He normally wakes up in time for his bedtime routine, but if he starts to sleep past the normal start time, I just start making more noise and turn on more lights to make it a little less comfy to sleep. This way he wakes up on his own and not by me going over there and picking him up. I did that once and it was ALL BAD. If he is sleeping in his swing, I first turn off the music, wait a little while, then turn off the swing or vibration and eventually he's up. Then we get started on the bedtime routine.

This is pretty much our schedule - it was as consistent when he first started daycare, but now he's settled into a routine and just started sleeping straight through until around 6 am or so.

  • When DD first started daycare, I would pick her up at 4pm, get home by 4:15, feed, and she would sleep from 5-7 because she would not sleep well at daycare.

Now that she is starting to take longer naps at daycare, she'll nap from 5-6 at home, with bedtime by 8:30. If she naps longer, I'll usually wake her up by 7pm and bedtime will be 9:30 at the latest.

  • I let DS take an evening nap around 6/6:30pm. He is usually tired about 1 to 1.5 hours after he eats. If he doesn't nap, he's super cranky! He will sleep between a half hour and hour.  Then around 7/7:30pm he is up and we do bath, nurse, play.  Around 8:30pm-9pm, I put him to bed.

In the past, I've tried to keep him up and not let him take his nap thinking he will go to down for the night earlier (7/7:30pm) but it didn't work.  He would wake up an hour later and would be up until at least 10:00pm.

  • My DD always takes a late afternoon nap, she can't handle being awake for more than 2 hours. We've always had to wake her for 'bedtime' but she eats and goes right back down. Lately her fourth bottle has been around 5, so I've been putting her in pjs and nighttime diaper before putting her down for her last 'nap' and then bedtime is more of a dream feed, since she's not really fully awake. She always seems to fall into a really deep sleep at this last nap, but she definitely needs her 5th bottle, otherwise shed be up wanting to eat overnight, and I'm not really interested in that :) I'm hoping eventually she won't need this late nap, but for right now, this works for us. DH and I get to eat dinner together without a cranky baby :)
