2nd Trimester

abnormal pap during pregnancy???

I've been getting paps done since I was 18 and this was the first one I've ever had come back abnormal! I am freaking out a bit...

The doc said at 20 weeks they will get up close and personal with my cervix and IF they see anything they will take a small tissue sample and test it.

I am freaking out. Anyone have anything like this happen to them?!

Re: abnormal pap during pregnancy???

  • My midwives always wait until about 10wks pp to due a pap.

  • The same month I got pregnant I had an ASCUS pap - my dr said he would check it out again after the pregnancy and it was normal.

Don't worry about it. Just listen to your dr.

  • I had this happen to me when I had my pap done on my first visit. First abnormal one ever. They will be getting up close and personal on my next visit. From what I hear it happens quite a lot when you are pregnant. Don't worry about it much until your doc says to worry.

I had a few in the past, and a LEEP to fix it a few years ago - then I had two normal ones in a row. When I got pregnant, it was abnormal again...! BUT when he took a closer look, he said there were no cell changes and he didn't need to biopsy anything...so I think maybe pregnancy makes it look abnormal sometimes, even if it's not?!

Hi, i also just got a letter in the post regarding the pap i had done at 10 weeks.  It said some mild atypia showed up and i had to check up what this meant (abnormal cells) but that all other testing was negative.  I think your pregancy hormones can cause this and although i did get upset after reading the letter (as i had also had clear results up until then), i am just going to talk to my OB about it next Monday and try not to worry too much.

  • I had abnormal paps for several years, colposcopys yearly to assess and then the cone cervical freezing procedure 4 years ago because there were still some atypical cells.   My paps have been normal since that time.  At my first ob appointment, they said that if the pap came back abnormal they wait until after the pregnancy to treat it (luckily it was normal).  It sound like they might do a colposcopy at your 20 week visit (look at cervix with microscope and take a biopsy if needed).  I would google colposcopy while pregnant to get more info on it.  From what I recall, it was a very minor procedure not much more than a pap so it might be completely safe during pregnancy (especially if they only need to look at cervix and don't need a biopsy).

I just found out I had an abnormal pap, first one ever, 3 weeks ago.  My doctor didn't seem too concerned about it but at my 24 week appointment when I have to take that sugary soda stuff I'm going to have a more upclose exam.  If anything is abnormal, its not harmful to the baby and can be taken care of after the pregnancy IF anything needs to be done.  It has me a little freaked out too, but the doctor seemed pretty relaxed and not concerned.

Same with me.  I had the colpo a few weeks ago and it was uncomfortable, but easy.  My doc didn't take a biopsy b/c everything looked normal.  She said sometimes pregnant women have atypical cells with paps because our immune system is so depressed.  Try not to be too worried about it!
