Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Anyone start FF their EBF LO at 7-8 months?

I've been EBFing my babies for almost 7 months now and I'm so sad to say, I'm just not making enough to keep up with their needs.  All of a sudden, I'm not pumping nearly as much as I was when I first returned to work 2 months ago and we're even supplementing with a bottle of BM on the weekends when I'm at home with them because they just aren't getting enough from me.  I BF them in the morning before work and before bed, they get 4 bottles while I'm gone.  They eat about 40 oz total - I pump three times a day and I'm lucky if I get 30 oz.  Luckily, I have about 300 oz in the freezer but we are we will go through that quickly, especially if I continue to make less and less.  I'd like to start supplementing with one bottle of formula a day soon, just to get them used to the taste in case we have to switch them to formula during the day.  I'm really hoping I can at least BF in the morning and before bed for a while longer.  Just wondering which formula is best (I'm really mostly concerned about the taste) for babies who have been EBF??  TIA!!

  •  I just started supplementing my 7 month old because she's on a nursing strike. :( I just bought a new electric pump though, and I'm going to work on getting my supply back up. Drinking a lot of water and tea as well as pumping after nursing seems to help. I don't live in America, so I can't suggest a brand of formula for you. I don't know if they have the same ones in Europe as they do in America. I used Bio Hipp 1 (organic).

    Good luck!

  • Wow...that is awesome that you were able to EBF twins for this long....that in and of itself is a great accomplishment! I also have low supply issues and have tried everything to increase it (lots of water, steel cut oatmeal, frequent nursing/pumping, fenugreek, etc). My DS still out-eats me! So we are now supplementing with Similac Sensitive on the recommendation of the Dietitian. While most formula's are all pretty much the same, she did say that Similac Sensitive has been shown to be the 'most like' breastmilk and has all the key nutrients they need. While nothing can ever compare to the 'liquid gold' of breastmilk....I think after trying several formula's (both name brand and generic) we love Similac Sensitive and so does baby.Good luck!
  • I've recently started pumping less frequently at work (was pumping 3x per day and now 2x per day) so I've been leaving one bottle that is a mix of bm and formula.  We use the Kirkland brand from Costco.  They haven't had a problem with it.

Whatever you do, I would mix the formula with breastmilk gradually.

I'm actually getting ready to slowly wean.  I have mixed feelings about it. I love nursing them, but HATE pumping. I surpassed my goal of 6 months.  Ideally, I'd like to nurse in the morning and before and provide formula the rest of the time, but who knows how long my supply will last at that.

    Good luck!

  • I'm having this problem too, and when I asked the pedi about it, she said to increase his solids to replace some of the milk calories throughout the day.  Milk will still be his main source of nutrition, but she said that since he's eating so much (28oz during my 9 hour work day) he will need to supplement with solids.

  • Yes, and we're using similac sensitive and she seems to be just fine. Great job making it EBF for TWO for such a long time! :)

  • We just gave DD a bottle of formula for the first time on Tuesday (6 month b-day) and she didn't bat an eye at it.  Took it just like it was breast milk.  We used Enfamil.  Good luck with whichever choice you make and WAY TO GO EBF twins this long!  GO YOU!!

  • We started supplementin at 7 1/2 months....we mix pumped BM w/ formula for one bottle at night because my supply at night was not enough. I have also in the last month given him a bottle of straight formula as well and he didnt even notice.  Per the pediatricians rec, we are using Parents Choice Advantage (walmart generic for Similac advance)  No problems w/ it so far.  Every baby is different, so just pick something and try it.  GL!

  • Congrats on making it this long! I made it 7 months before I got to a point where I couldn't pump at work anymore due to a busy workload. I was only pumping once a day anyway, so my DH and I decided to go with formula during the day. We randomly picked a formula (Similac Advanced) and did two half formula/BM bottles before realizing she could care less if it was BM or formula. No problems for her at all!

And I'm so much happier now, because I still BF from 6 pm to about 8 am. My supply hasn't changed at all during those hours, and the stress of always worrying if I have enough is completely gone! With this arrangement, I can comfortably say that I will probably continue nursing until her first birthday, if not longer. Good luck!
