Talk To me About Ovulation Prediction Sticks...

I have never used them. Do they work Are they pricey? I *think* I have seen them at Dollar Tree. I have always used BBT and thankfully it worked....but I am curious how these things work and when do you use them?

TIA

Re: Talk To me About Ovulation Prediction Sticks...

  • I use/used the clear blue easy fertility monitor. I'm lazy. It's easy, just push a button and pee on the stick and put it in the monitor. No temping or thinking :)

First 2-3 months you use quite a few sticks as the monitor learns your cycle then it's just a few a month.

  • I've used several different kinds of OPKs. The least expensive ones are the Wondfo strips...you can get them on amazon. I used the first response (non-digital) ones as a backup to make sure the strips were really working, and the strips ended up with the same results, maybe even a little bit more sensitive. I also used the CBEFM, but used OPKs as a backup because of the clomid and medications I take.

  • Take it with a grain of salt because I only did it for two cycles (I guess that's a good thing though because they helped us get pregnant).

I charted with my temp and then during the time when I "thought" I was ovulating I would use an OPK. I used the really over-priced digital smiley faced ones (a couple reasons for that, but anyway).

Well, I'm 14 weeks along now and that smiley face was on both the OPK and DH that day. =) So, yes, they worked for us and it also helped me with the charting.

I have a good friend that uses the wondofo or whatever they're called from Amazon and then double checks when she's got a positive with the digital one. That is probably a more cost effective option.

ETA: GL and I hope to see a BFP post soon...unless you are TTA and then I hope I see a fun alcohol filled vacation soon for you and your DH. ;) Heck, I just hope to see you soon, it has been way too long!

  • I recently bought the Ovulation Sticks from the $ tree to use for this cycle. So I can't vouch for their effectiveness, but they were cheap, and I figured WTH. I bought the Target brand to use and they were $12.50 for 7 sticks, so the math obviously works out that the Dollar Tree ones are more cost effective. This is the first time ever that I have used ovulation sticks. GL to you!!!
  • I used them with DS1.  I think they were the Clear Blue Easy ones...I bought them at Costco, but they were still a bit pricey.  I had just started charting as well and wanted to see if the OPK info would align with my chart info.  I only used them for 2 cycles and we were pregnant, so I guess they worked for us!

  • I have used the Dollar Store OPKs, the Wondfos, and the OPKs from Early-Pregnancy-Tests.com. I also used the Clear Blue Easy Digital OPK. I've even used them at the same time (with the same urine) to test their accuracy and performance against each other.I was also charting diligently, and had a strong sense of how my cycle functioned and when ovulation was likely to occur, which helped me more specifically tailor when I used the tests (so I wasn't using like 20 of each every month to test and compare).

What I found is that the Wondfos tend to be the most sensitive of the bunch. I often times had a clearer positive with the Wondfos (keep in mind the line has to be as dark, or darker than the control line to get a positive on an OPK), while the same urine would give me a line that wasn't quite positive with the E-P-T.com and Dollar Store tests.

I also started using the CBE Digital (with the smiley face) to confirm a positive reading on the cheapie OPKs. That was immensely helpful when it was so close that I wasn't sure. Plus, by only using maybe two or three digital test strips a month, for confirmation purposes only, it was quite cost effective.

On a semi-related note, for the HPTs I similarly tested a bunch of different brands, and I liked the extra sensitive tests from Early-Pregnancy-Tests.com (which can detect down to 10 miu of HCG). I also used the Wondfo HPTs, Dollar Store HPTs, and finally a First Response Gold Digital to confirm the positive HPT. The cycle we got pregnant, I started testing at 7 DPO. At 10 DPO I got an extremely faint line on the 10 miu test from E-P-T.com, using FMU. The other regular HPT tests had no line at all (in fact, I think I may have had a few bad Wondfo HPTs, because some of them failed to work at all). I confirmed a couple of hours later (not with FMU, obviously, but I held my urine for about 4 hours) using the First Response Digital Gold, and it came back with a positive (which means it's definitely a very sensitive test).

    Hope that's helpful!

Ditto. I've gotten pregnant every cycle I've used the CBEFM and we were actually trying.

  • I have used the best OPK's, the Clear blue brand and it was confusing to me. I guess I'm not as regular as some so I was never sure when to start and when to stop and if the stick missed my LH surge or if I had not ovulated yet, etc. I switched to the CBEFM and no, I'm not pregnant, but the cycle days that are best for trying are much more apparent to me. It's very "Clear" and very "easy" as the name says.
