SAHM vs Daycare Poll

So I had an interesting conversation with daycare this morning about Boy to Girl Ratio...

It seems that there are more girls than boys in nearly every classroom. It seems to be that there are usually 7 girls and 2 boys. They said they have heard that there are statistics that moms of boys are more likely to stay home. Just curious of what the breakdown is here. "Daycare" includes any care arrangement other than you...

Re: SAHM vs Daycare Poll

  • There are more boys than girls in Callie's room at daycare. She was the only girl until recently.

  • DD is the only girl on most days. There are 3 other girls that my DC watches part time or on occasion.

  • I just called a daycare and they said they have almost all boys in the class LO would be in. In the in-home dc he is currently in there is 2 other boys, sometimes 1 girl and DS.

  • This seems very odd to me. I don't see how the gender of the baby has anything to do with whether a mom (or dad) decides to stay home...

I voted SS. I work part time, but Reed goes to my inlaw's instead of daycare on the days I have to work.

  • my daycare is the exact opposite too. Alexis is the only girl in her class of 9. I'm guessing it's a 50/50 average, like everything gender related ;)

  • I agree that seems odd.  We had planned for me to SAH for a long time before we even had kids, so the gender of the baby had no bearing on our decision.
  • Since Stella started daycare, it's been roughly even between boys and girls.

  • There were way more boys in my LO's daycare until recently - now it's about even.

  • I have been staying home with C thus far but in the next month or so she will start daycare.  So I voted ss.

  • I voted that my child goes to daycare and first born is a boy, but technically I'm still on maternity leave. Once my leave is up I plan on returning to work (at least part time) and sending LO to daycare.

  • SS here. I work 4 days a week, but DS doesn't go to DC, he stays at our home and my MIL watched him.

  • I voted SS. When i'm in class/work  my mil watches DD.

  • I read some where long ago that it takes 2 kids to replace 1 women. That is why their are more girls then boys in the world. I don't know how true all that is but thought it was interesting.

For the poll- SAHM and first born is a boy. I would of been a SAHM regardless of sex.

  • Ty's DC is pretty split boy/girl.
  • I'm half SAHM half DC since Ev only goes part time, but he is only 1/2 boys in his class of 8 at DC.

  • When E was in daycare regularly, there were more boys in her class than girls (4-2).  I have a hard time believing there's any truth to your DCP's theory...

  • I voted SS.  I've extended my maternity leave so that I can stay home with her until August.  But she will go to daycare once I return to work.

I hope that this is actually a birth trend lol  In my last class of 28 5th graders, only 4 of them were girls!!!!  And in the other grade 5 class it was about the same!

  • Interesting. At J's daycare that theory is correct. There are 8 girls and 2 boys.

  • I would have been a SAHM regardless of whether my first born was a boy/girl. For us it made the most financial sense and we could afford to do it. As soon as #2 hits preschool, I'm going back. I'm getting a little antsy, it's been about 2.5 yrs.

  • I dont think it was meant as a hard and fast statistic or that the decision to stay home was based solely on the gender of the child. I would be shocked if that was the reasoning for staying home. They said the gender split has been pretty typical in other places they have worked around here. Just more of a curiosity.

  • I voted SS.  I work at home so I don't consider myself a SAHM.  N is not in daycare.  He stays home with MH and myself.

  • I'm only going to SAH until Mila is in Kindergarten... unless, of course, we really need me to go back to work before that. I miss work like crazy sometimes... but I know they're only going to be this little for so long, and I'm lucky to have the opportunity to be able to stay at home when many *can't*.

  • My anecdotal observation: In our neighborhood, there's only one girl out of a group of 6 who were born within months of each other last year.  We see more girls when we go to different play groups but 9 times out of ten the boys outnumber the girls.

  • ours is an even split and i am the mom of a girl and i would kill to stay home

  • I am not a SAHM, but my kids don't go to daycare either (we have an au pair).  My first born was a boy, but in any case I'd have to go to work.

I used to work at a daycare (and went to school to be an early childhood teacher) and the stats. always showed that moms were more likely to send boys to daycare.. it's was more the mentality that boys are "rough and tough" and can handle daycare, where as girls need to be nurtured and coddled... my how things have changed!

I have B/B twins, and I'm staying home with them their first year. They'll go to daycare in August.

  • I don't SAH, but LO isn't in daycare. I took a long maternity leave and now MH or my sister watch her on the days I work (I work PT). LO is a girl, if that matters for your research :)
  • I work, MH is a SAHD, but Ash is at my sisters 2 days a week so MH can get schoolwork done. This would have been the arrangement regardless of gender.
