2nd Trimester

Anyone else have low Free Beta HCG at first trimester screening?

My number for the free beta hcg was a 1 at my 12 week bloodwork, which is on the low side according to the GC.

All other numbers (papp-a) and NT measurements were good.

Anyone else have just a LOW HCG (but all else good?)

If so, how has the pregnancy been going?  Went for 16 week bloodwork today and have to wait till next week for results

  • Mine was low too. It goes down after 12 weeks - could you actually be farther along?

I had an amnio and level II us at 20 weeks. So far everything is ok. Hope it continues this way.

    Good luck to you!

Do you mean the bloodwork that goes along with the NT scan?  If so, yes! Mine was on the low side and everything else was normal (and my odds for all the trisomies remained low even though I am 35).  I was wondering, too, and asked my doc (he was not concerned).  I am still breastfeeding and wondering if that has anything to do with it as I know bf-ing does impact hormones.  What did your doc say?  I know they get concerned if the PAPP-A (placental issues) is low but I can't find anything about low free beta HCG levels (in isolation) and like I said, doc said not a big deal.

Also, when you say you were a 1, do you mean the MoM?  If so, 1 is the median (which is really good).  Do you mean .1?  Mine was .4 MoM and I think anything below .5 (other places even say .4) is considered low.

  • Both the Free Beta HCG and PAPP-A were low.  My risk for Trisomy 13/18 were increased, but still within the normal range.  After the 16 week blood work, my risk went back down again for Trisomy 18, but my risk for spina bifida was slightly above the normal cutoff.  Both results seem to be more of an indication of possible growth issues.  I had a Level II with the perinatologist and everything looked good.  I'm just being monitored closely for growth later on in the pregnancy.

  • Thanks everyone for the info and helping me remain calm :)

I called the nurse today to express my concern and unfortunately missed her call back.  She did leave a message saying that "we somethings looking into things too much" and that I shouldn't worry, she thinks all looks fine but she's calling me back in the morning.

hopefully the 16 week bloodwork and 20 week U/S come back good! :)
