RP Aug '12: Getting tubes tied without a c-section

Obviously no one has experienced this on this board :)  but I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of it or knew anyone that has had it done. My Dr. asked at my appt. yesterday if I wanted a tubal after the delivery. I thought she was asking if I wanted an elective c-section but she said they can do it without a c-section as well. About an hour after delivery I go to the surgery room and they make a small incision below (?) my belly button and tie the tubes. She said it takes all of 5-10 minutes.

I had no idea this was a possibility. Permanent BC has been on our minds a lot lately but we felt like there was no good solution (DH isn't crazy about getting a V). I need to research it more and we obviously need to make the decision if we are done for good or not, but I  just was curious what the information/opinions/reviews were out there for this.

  • It's up to you...but it's much less invasive for the man to get the procedure.  There is no incision in his belly.

  • My mom had her tubes tied after her vbac with my brother.  She said it was quick and no big deal.

I'll be having a RCS, but my OB said the tube tie is super quick and would add maybe 5 minutes to my surgery time.

  • I don't know anyone who has done this, but my OB also asked me if I wanted a tubal during my c/s.  She could tell I wasn't sure and said that if you aren't 100% sure this is my last to not do it.  She also said that she doesn't recommend you make the decision while pg because your current physical state could sway you and you may regret having it done.

I wouldn't want to have an additional surgery after giving birth vaginally either.  You'll be recovering in 2 different areas and that may make it difficult to take care of your new lo and your older children.

  • There is an in office procedure called Essure that my office does all of the time. They insert coils in your tubes and will make the tubes scar shut. In 3 months you get an HSG to prove it worked. They numb your cervix and pass a hysterscope and that is how they do the procedure.

  • I plan on getting mine tied after delivery either way.  I don't really care how it gets done as long as it gets done especially considering I got pregnant w/ an IUD in this time.

    Yes
  • It's a simple surgery but it is a surgery. There is a recovery associated with it and there is some pain. The real question is whether or not you want to have a baby vaginally and a surgery in the same day. It may not hurt to talk to someone who has had a laproscopic tubal or another simple laproscopic surgery to see how they felt. Either way you should make sure your doc is ready to do it just in case you have to have a c-section for some reason. Usually there's paperwork to fill out and it would suck to have to have another surgery when you could have had it done during a surgery you already were having.

  • If you're sure you want it, I think that's a great time to get it. I have a friend who just did this. She said she it didn't add any extra hospital time, or recovery pain.
