Chronic Pain Anyone?

Any one here with chronic pains or know someone that has chronic pains and have been pregnant? Just wondering-  i was diagnosed with Crohn's and IBD back in May and had Surgery back in July. We was not looking to get pregnant but miracles do happen. I was just wondering what to expect if anything is going to be different because of my disease.

Hope ya'll have a great day!!!!

Re: Chronic Pain Anyone?

  • I don't have Crohn's but was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia a year ago. So, yes, I understand the chronic pain thing. I'm so sorry you have to deal with it...I wouldn't wish it on anyone. And I hate to say it, but yes, it's made being pregnant even more difficult for me (not that I could compare it to a normal pregnancy as I am a FTM). I have another friend who deals with chronic pain, and she said that prenatal yoga really helped her. I haven't tried it, but just ordered a dvd off of Amazon for $10 to give it a try. She mainly dealt with hip pain (which is my nemesis at the moment) and said that it helped to loosen her joints up, as prenatal yoga is mostly just stretching. I'm willing to give it a shot. Hope you find some comfort...if I had more advice, I'd share, but don't...I'm just trying to take it day by day :)

  • I had a nearly disabling painful pelvic ligament issue that started at 24w PG with DS followed by pelvic nerve damage during his delivery with DS. The pain lasted over a year until...well..this PG started. For some reason that defies medical explanation, my pain has been much less since I've been PG. I am holding my breath though, as I expect it to come back. Obviously my situation is differen because it is chronic pain, but not a chronis illness--but I can tell you that biofeedback sessions were AMAZINGLY helpful to me. I met with a wonderful chronic pain counselor with a medicaly background who led my sessions until I could do the breathing and relaxation on my own. Also, I am seeing a chiro who speciaizes in PG this time. I also would consider accupuncture in a flare-up. I am seeing a MW for this PG who has me on specific extra vitamins and herbs to boost my body's ability to heal and to keep inflamation down without medicine.
  • I have Fibromyalgia and Arthritis! (Not that I am excited, but I don't talk to many others who are pregnant and have chronic pain.) My fibro has been really bad in my hips and I have been having my unending, chronic tension headaches. So much fun!!

So far I have to say that eventhough I am in pain everyday, it's not as bad as I had feared. I hear it will (or may) get much worse later though. I do prenatal yoga which actually helps me find better positions to sleep in at night. Sleeping is one of the worst times for me. The yoga shows me how my body can move and what is comfortable without me worrying about squishing the baby and such. I'm not going to say that it has taken my pain away...it has just helped me to cope and get small amounts of relief. Sometimes I take Tylenol even though it does nothing. I think its just like I need the psychological feeling that I am at least TRYING to make the pain go away. Heat sometimes works for certain kinds of pain in certain places.

Honestly, all the work I have done B4 pregnancy with specialists who showed me how to breath, relax my body, and take care of myself have helped. Also, I think that the pregnancy hormones have made me insist on my health and take care of myself. I'm not pushing my body as hard as I used to and for me it is better.

I have to close with....I am counting the days until I can take medicine again. It will be a long time becuase I am going to try to BF, but I still can't wait.

  • To add... (like I havn't been talkative enough)...

My sister also has arthritis but a different kind with more inflamation than me. She has a reduction in symptoms with pregnancy. This is becuase pregnancy suppresses the immune system. When she is not pregnant she takes immunosuppressant drugs anyways. This happens to some people with chronic pain. I'm really happy for her and I wish that could happen to everyone. Pregnancy can be hard enough!

  • I too have chronic pain. I have had 5 orthopedic surgeries on both knees and at age 30, need two full knee replacements (despite that no surgeon will even consider touchng you until you are in your 50's). My pregnancy was a surprise, I didn't find out until I was a good 7 weeks. My pain has been well controlled previously on a high dose of Ultram daily. The day I found out I was pregnant I began weening myself off but I am concerned about the damage I did before knowing. I had my first OB apt on Monday. The Dr did an ultrasound and everything looks fine so far. He wasn't even that concerned about me being on the pain meds. He basicly said if I needed it it was better to be on it then in pain but I am still worried. (Ultram is a class C drug meaning no human studies on the effects on pregnancy)
