So ive been told I have Gestational Diabetes... a type of diabetes that forms while your pregnant.. It usually goes away after birth, so I shouldnt be too concerned... I was pre-dispositioned to it, as my dad is Type 2 and its more common in Native American peoples. Lucky Me.
But its still ruined my whole day. I spoke to a nutritionist today and my life has gone from doing pretty much whatever I want and not thinking about it.. to reading every label, planning meals and pricking my finger to test my blood 3 times a day..
Its going to be a long 3+ months still... fml..
Re: Gestational Diabetes
Don't worry! I was also really sad when I was diagnosed with "borderline" GD in my last pregnancy but soon saw that despite the hassle, it was a REALLY good way to get my diet in order and live even healthier. I've always had a sweet tooth, so I took the opportunity to stop all sugar and finally shake the cravings I've always had.
Go to the high risk pregnancy board here...I found them sooo helpful and supportive! Once you've got the first 3 weeks behind you, it really does become second nature.
A little aside: ever since, I've lived a controlled-carb lifestyle and have never been healthier, more energetic or thinner in my entire life as I was after that pregnancy. I didn't gain any weight on the diet while pregnant and was back to pre-pregnancy weight in a flash. This pregnancy is going great as I've continued to eat this way and it's wonderful to know that every single thing I eat will nourish the baby (I don't eat sugar, grains or potatoes).
I think you'll come to appreciate it! Blessing in disguise.
My three little ones
If it makes you feel any better, I was diagnosed at my first OB appointment. So I've been dealing with it the entire pregnancy, as well as my last pregnancy. It's not so bad, and watching your diet and sugars are so important to that baby.
I've always said that having GD with my daughter was a blessing in disguise. It forced me to keep an eye on what I was eating. If left to my own devices, I would've cheated. But since I was doing it for her, I kept to a strict diet. So the blessing was that it kept me from gaining too much weight and forced me to eat more healthful things.
You can do this. It's a short three months!
