So else who has been diagnosed with GD so far?

I was diagnosed yesterday after coming in slightly above what they wanted to see on two of the four draws. I'm feeling pretty down about it, but I'm meeting with a diabetes management specialist tomorrow where I'll be getting a glucometer and nutritional counseling, and in 3 weeks we'll be assessed by maternal-fetal medicine and get a growth ultrasound.

Who else was diagnosed recently, and how are you feeling about it?

Re: So else who has been diagnosed with GD so far?

  • I was just diagnosed today and I'm mad! I knew it was a very high possibility with have multiples but I only failed by 1 on my 1 hour getting a 140 so I thought maybe I'd pass the 3 hour. NOPE! I have to get a call from the dietitician (sp?) But I am so not happy about it, granted I am almost 31 weeks and only have 5-6 weeks left so I might survive...;) I think the 3 day high carb diet they made me follow did me in!

  • I was diagnosed last week.. I had it with my first so when I completely bombed the one hr this time they just went ahead and diagnosed me
  • I was diagnosed a few weeks ago. It hasn't been too bad. I feel like I eat way more than I ever did before, and I am losing weight. However, I am just happy to keep it in check to keep the baby healthy. However, I do want some chocolate cake after I deliver. Smile
  • I was diagnosed at 28wks. So far I am not too happy about it but it takes time to get into the swing of things. I met w/a nutritionist and also with the OB advice nurse. They taught me to take my blood sugar and told me what is acceptable. I have an appt next week so I will know more then on how it changes the next 8 1/2 weeks. I am already scheduled for a csection for other reasons so baby's size doesn't matter but I know there are other risks to GD. So far they have not scheduled me any extra appts or u/s. We will see what they say at my 32 wk appt.

Like the pp said, I have never eaten this much and I am losing/maintaining weight. I started overweight for this pregnancy and have only gained 10 pounds so this may just keep me under the goal of 15-20 pounds which would be nice.

  • i have it, not too big of a deal, i like having control over something, my diet and exercise were good to start i don't have changes to make, just stay on track, and ignore my craving for apple fritters.  i'm on the 4th week with it.

just remember you didn't do anything wrong to get GD, and of all the complications, this is not a bad one, and you have control over it, esp if you barely failed, you may be surprised how little has to change.

  • I was diagnosed about 3 weeks ago. It has been frustrating trying to find what foods work for me, but you will figure it out. I have lost weight and currently weigh less than what I weighed pre-pregnancy.
  • I was diagnosed last week. I was fortunate to be able to meet with a dietician and nurse educator the same day that I was diagnosed. I definitely have moments where I am hating it - I was kind of looking forward to being able to eat more than 2 or 3 Girl Scout cookies at a time! I told my husband that I have several desires after I deliver - including Girl Scout cookies, a big bowl of pasta, and eating ice cream every night for a week. Whether or not I will actually feel that way after I deliver remains to be seen, of course - I have a feeling that they only thing I will be craving then is sleep!

The good news is that I have been feeling a little better since I started following the meal plan and testing. Most of my levels have been where they are supposed to be, which is encouraging. It is very frustrating to me when I ate the same thing two days in a row and get a good reading one day and a high reading the next day - not super high, but higher than it's supposed to be. I also have noticed that when I get stressed out that my readings are higher than normal. If I am having a stressful day at work and get a high reading, I do some deep breathing and test a few minutes later - and it almost always comes down to be close to the target range.

I don't think that I'm going to be one to lose weight on my meal plan because I still have aversions to most vegetables - so when I need an extra snack or something without carbs, I'm turning more to cheese and nuts. I'm sure that I wasn't getting enough protein before this, so it's probably not a bad thing - but I don't think that it's going to do too much for keeping off the extra pounds at the end. I have only gained 10-11 so far, which is okay - a little more than ideal because of being overweight to begin with, but certainly not bad.

The other thing that concerns me is that I have way more questions for my doctor than I did before - in terms of extra monitoring, inductions, etc.

OP - I'm glad that you started this thread! I have been looking at some things on the high-risk board, but I really like talking to the May mommiesSmile
