Pregnant after a Loss

Movement question...(yes, it's a freak out post)

So I know, I know, these movement posts are not very original, but hey, what can you do.

I'm having an uncharacteristically slow movement day today.  I thought after 28 weeks, those were supposed to be non-existent, since that's when everyone starts kick counts (because 28 weeks is when movement is supposed to be very consistent).  Well my OB doesn't have her patients do kick counts because a) it freaks them out, and b) at some point movement will slow down because baby will run out of room and that's normal.  Well I know at 29.5 weeks, the baby is not out of room yet.  I also cannot say for sure that I am not feeling 10 movements in an hour, since I'm not counting...that being said, I'm only feeling minor movements (where I almost have to question whether it was in fact movement), every half hour to 45 minutes, so if you do the math, that's certainly not 10 movements an hour.  Considering I usually feel movements every 5-10 minutes, you can see where this would be kind of alarming.

Anyone else have a similar experience around 29-30 weeks?  Should I be worried that it's very inconsistent, minor movement today, or should I calm down since I'm still definitely feeling at least 1-2 movements per hour?

Just another PGAL kinda day...

TIA ladies.

  • I would lay down and concentrate on it until you feel the 10.  Maybe LO turned themself into a position where the kicks aren't as strong.

  • What are you doing right now?  Are you at work?  I used to be so busy and walking around, I would go almost an entire work day before stopping to think..."hmm, has the baby moved?"  Then I'd make a point to sit for a bit and relax till I felt something and then I'd be off running again.  Point is, when I'm moving, I don't feel much.

If you're home, lay down and drink some juice and relax and concentrate and see what you get.  If after an hour or so, you don't feel much, then call your OB.

  • I was told last time that sometimes when babies go through growth spurts they don't move as much. I had a scare of little movement for 3 days last time, but she was perfectly fine when they did an u/s. I'd also do what the ladies are suggesting with cold water and sweets. Although I was told drink a cold glass of OJ and lay down and count.

This. I had a very similar post a couple of weeks ago.  What I find is that LO has days where the movements aren't as frequent or powerful, but are still there. I just don't notice them much. So I'd suggest laying down with some ice water or something sugary and see how long it takes to get to ten. No tv or anything. I'd miss movement when I was browsing the net.

  • Yes, I am at work, so it is possible there is movement going on and I'm distracted.  I did (ironically), get three good movements in about 5 minutes after I posted...it's the longest I've been sitting still all day and not running around doing stuff.  When I get home, I will drink some juice/ice water and lay down and see what's going on in there.  Definitely possible that I'm just not noticing it.

I didn't realize how stressful it would be after 28 weeks...before that point it was always, "If you don't feel consistent movement, don't worry about it."  Now it's all regimented:  If you don't feel 10 in an hour, get your behind to an OB ASAP!  That's a lot of pressure!!!

Thanks for all the responses and suggestions!

  • My OB usually has me look for movement (not a certain amount) w/in an hour after eating.  So, I would lay down, eat or drink something sweet and see if you feel movement.  I found that around 30 weeks, baby had very slow days, usually right before a growth spurt.  They're starting to pack on pounds now, so some days are slower.  I think it's also a weird spot in PG where baby doesn't have as much room to kick, but isn't big enough to feel every little move yet (I finally got to this point this week).

  • I definitely had quieter days when pregnant with DS. I would have a glass of juice and lay down and really concentrate. DS also had quieter times of day. Maybe your LO is a night owl!
