Finally more answers as to why I feel so run down.

So I posted awhile back that I was feeling run down and found out I was very low on Iron.  Started on the Iron and felt better but still not great.  Well I recently had a whole panel of blood tests run (25 of them.)  Not only am I low on Iron I'm also very low on Vitamin B1, B12, D, K, and Calcium.  So starting tomorrow I start taking my vitamins again.  I should have been taking them all along but I stopped and never started taking them.  I'm just glad I found out about these other things because I knew it had to be more than just Iron I was low on.

  • Well glad they found something you can fix. Maybe ask your doctor why you may be running so low on so many nutrients. Is it dietary? Or maybe there is an absorption issue? Because to be honest, someone should not be low on B12 generally unless they have malabsorption. Also in that case a shot works a lot better since it bypasses the GI tract which is where the absorption problem is.

Calcium and Iron compete for absorption so don't take them at the same time. Hugs! And feel better soon.

  • Thanks!  I had Gastric Bypass 10 years ago so I have malabsorbtion due to that.  I know that I need to take the supplements for the rest of my life but I had fallen off track with them and never started back.  I knew I needed to get back on track not only for myself but for my family.

  • J, I had an almost identical panel of not so great blood work and am working on getting back on track. It can be a long road (according to my docs!) and can be tricky to figure out when to take which supplements so they don't interfere with each other, etc.  My iron stores are non-existant and oral supplements aren't as effective as I need them to be so I've been doing iron infusions once a week for a month and it seems to be helping -- I feel a lot better anyway!  It was my doc's last option and she was not in a hurry to offer it since I'm sure it is expensive but it works much faster and gets me back to normal functioning much faster.

Just wanted to put that out there in case you find you aren't feeling better as quickly as you'd like.

Thanks!  I have to take an iron supplement that is only available to kidney dialysis patents.  It isn't any more expensive than the regular supplements so that is one good thing!  I have a chart they gave me telling me when to take what supplement and what to take it with.

Hope you start feeling better quickly!!!

Oh that makes sense! I hope you feel better soon. Again though, may want to ask about the B12 shot, that  deficiency could really cause problems.
