static

what do you ladies do to combat static?  i have been using wool dryer balls instead of fabric softener and it was helping at first but now since it is colder, i feel like the static is out of control.  i keep shocking the baby when i pick him up.  before when static was a problem i would use "static guard", or "downey wrinkle releaser"  but now i would rather stay away.  any ideas?

Re: static

  • I use an humidfier to moisten the air in the house.  Static is a result of low moisture in the air, which happens in the colder weather.

If you don't have a humidifier, boil a full pot of water down to about 1" on your stove.  Or set a kettle of water on your radiator.

The vinegar in the wash seems to help some people, but I haven't tried it.

Also, up your personnal liquid intake.  If your skin is dry, you're more likely to shock those around you.

  • I have found that the wool dryer balls have helped to reduce the time to dry my clothes.  Tonight I put in a load on high for only 30 minutes.  And the stuff came out 99% dry after that time.  If I keep them in the dryer longer, that's when it gets really static-y.  So perhaps cutting down on the dry cycle will help.

But I also agree that a humidifier can help immensely when it gets dry around the house.
