Re: CPW - Will you breastfeed?

  • I voted for "want to try."  I really struggled with my DS.  He never latched, so I pumped for 3 weeks and just wore myself out.  It was torture...and I was pumping only a couple of oz at a time.  So, I'm going to see how things go with this one, but I'm completely ok to formula feed sooner this time if need be.

I'm so worried LO won't latch! I keep having nightmares about it, actually (mostly that the baby is a half-animal or something and can't BF :D ). This is such a complicated issue, I'm always curious to see how other mamas handle it.

  • I plan to... DS had no issues other than learning to latch at the hospital but by the time we got home he did great. I'm really hoping this time around goes as well.

  • DS had trouble latching. I think it is more common than people think. BF does not just come easy to many babies and their momma's. I would suggest finding resources in your area before your baby comes. Besides the lactation consultant at the hospital, their is a clinic across the street 3 days a week where they will observe you and your baby, give pointers, and do free weight checks so you can monitor if your baby is gaining weight or not. This was a great resources and really helped me get through the first two weeks of BF, which were the most difficult. After that, it was a breeze!

  • I bf DD until she was 6 months old and if it wasn't for supply issues, I would have loved to have done it longer. When she was 3 months, I had to stop EBF and just bf for a few sessions, pump, bottle feed and use formula for when I didn't have enough breastmilk. It was tough but I managed.

I am really looking forward to nursing again and hoping I am able to do it longer this time and not have so many issues.

  • Yep. I'm still bfing DD right now.

It actually took 5 months for her to learn how to latch. I pumped for three months, then we transitioned to the nipple shield for 2 months before she finally got the hang of bfing.

Im so glad I stuck with it for those 5 months. I practically lived at the LC office. Bfing was the best choice I ever made.

Now, she's a boob addict. It's so nice to be able to go out and not have to worry about brining bottles/nipples/cooler pack/bottle warmer. I can feed her whenever, wherever. It's like an instant calming device. If she's in meltdown mode, I stick a boob in her mouth and it's instant calm.

  • I have inverted nipples and my LC told me it would be a difficult time.  Awesome.  But I'll try for a month and see how things progress.

I'm worried about it too, but if anything is wrong, I'm just going to talk to a lactation consultant & try to get it figured out asap.

  • It WILL work with this baby.  Please let it work!  I worked so hard with a LC and tried everything she suggested with DS and still at 3 weeks, he wasn't at his birth weight, wasn't latching, would just cry at feedings, and I ended up switching to pumping and did so for 11 months, until we had our loss and I somehow thought maybe that had something to do with it and stopped.  But by then I had been doing some goat and cow milk mixes in anyways, so we just switched hi over full time a little early.  I can't see myself being a full time pumper with a NB and a toddler though so this time it WILL work.

  • SS here... I will give it a shot again, but I am not going to beat myself up like I did with DS when my milk supply failed to come in.  I will NOT starve my child because I feel the need to breastfeed.

It was my plan, with him, to breastfeed until I went back to work & then pump.   He had an amazing latch from the second he was born, however, my body failed me.  I tried it all, even had a consultant come to the house.  We were doing everything right, but my supply was not enough for him.  I would do 15-20 minutes on each breast & he would still be screaming for more.  45 minutes later we would start the process again.  I ended up having to supplement, after the consultant & pedi recommended it.  Neither of us slept well & we were both miserable.  I will not go through that again.  This time around if I feel we are both getting too upset & it's not working I will go right to the bottle.  I want to enjoy my time with my last baby.  Every second.

The hippy in me is still sad it didn't work, but the mom in me knows I did the right thing.  Still jealous of those super moms that could do it.

  • I voted no.  I don't plan to.  No medical issues, no medication problem.  I just don't care to.  That's all.
