Is your LO sitting up unassisted?

Just curious.  DD still needs help.  She was born at the end of August and isn't even 6 mos old yet.

Re: Is your LO sitting up unassisted?

  • My LO started sitting up at 6 mos 3 days, so don't worry!

  • P has been sitting up on her own for maybe 2 weeks now. Don't worry too much about it! Our doc said sitting up unassisted and not propping themselves up at this age is advanced.

  • Yes, but it took a few weeks for him to get good at it.  Don't worry about it! They all do things on their own time. My LO still won't roll back to front and still wakes up every two hours!
  • DD can sit for up to 30 seconds unassisted.

  • Yes, but not for a very long time yet. She's gotten a lot better in the past week or two. As others have said though, every baby is different and it's still an advanced skill at this point.

  • DD does, and is getting better by the day.  That being said she's not good enough for me to plop her down and walk away - she'd crash pretty quick.

Agree.  She did for 5 mins today and that was by far a record.

  • No, she can't sit up unassisted just yet. I can tell she really wants to, though.

  • Yes, but not for very long. Also, she just started doing this last week, it seemed to happen overnight.

  • I can get about 30 seconds out of him unassisted until he topples over.  I asked the pediatrician at our 6 month appointment (he wasn't doing it at all then), and she said it was totally normal and that she'd only be concerned/potentially seek physical therapy if he's not doing it consistently by his 9 month check up...plenty of time!

  • She started around 5 months for seconds. Now a week away from 7 months she rarely falls over, but does from time to time especially when she's tired. Each day got longer and longer.. I wouldn't worry she's not even 6 mo ths yet.

  • Yep, but I don't think it's outrageous for them to not be sitting up yet. My niece still needs a little support and she's 3 weeks older than DS. Her pedi isn't concerned in the least.

  • DS has for a while, probably since 5.5 months or so. Now he can sit and play by himself and I don't worry about it. He's also one of the older babies, though, so that makes a difference. He still gets excited and flops back. Thankfully we have soft carpet, and sometimes we still leave a pillow behind him for this reason. I think he knows it's going to be a soft landing, but we've had a few hard crashes. Each baby is different, so don't worry too much.

  • yes.  He's been doing it for a few weeks.  I wouldn't leave him on a hard floor though.  He still falls sometimes when he is reaching for something far away and once he's down, he's down for good.  As long as he's on a soft mat though, he's good to go.

  • She began doing it at 6m1d. Don't worry - it's still early!

  • yes, but I wouldn't be worried if your LO is not. This stuff develops so fast, so it's possible you'll have a sitter in a week - who knows!
  • Yes, she's been sitting up unassisted since right before she turned 6 months old. She'll be 7 months old next week.

  • yes, she started at about 5.5 months (like I could just leave her on the floor to play for long periods of time), but her doc was super surprised that it happened so early. DD1 was 7 months before she could even sit for a minute by herself.

  • yes. She started sitting on her own about a week before her 6 month birthday, but I had to be near her to catch all the falls. on her 6 month birthday she could sit and be left. Now I sit her and run up stairs if needed. She is starting to move to crawl, so that won't be the case for very long.

  • Collin's been sitting unassisted since about a week before he turned 6 months...and even then to start he was really wobbly and would only last for a few seconds. Over the course of a couple weeks, he's now able to sit unassisted as long as he desires (he's gone up to a 1/2 hour before he gets sick of not being held and wants me to pick him up).

However, he *just* rolled back to belly this weekend (and is now barrel-rolling all over my living room), and he'll be 7 months this coming Thursday.

There are babies that are younger than Collin that are already babbling (something that I've been anxiously waiting to hear!), when my LO is not. You just have to remember it will all come with time. If the pedi isnt concerned yet, neither should you be. :)

  • Natalie has been sitting unassisted for about two weeks. It took her a while to get good at it. Now she can push herself to sitting from crawling, which is awesome. Before she learned to do that she would start fussing when she was tired of crawling around but couldn't quite get to sitting. Not that she sits still for very long anyway...

  • LO started tripoding at 4 months and was sitting unassisted at 4.5 months. He's been able to sit and play unassisted for long periods (45-60 minutes) since just before 5 months. Every baby is different and most of his friends his age are just starting to sit momentarily now. Now at 6.5 months he is starting to pull up on things, can stand for a while if we put him in that position holding on to something and scoots around the room on his butt. He can roll both ways (since 3 months) but prefers to scoot to get places. I'm pretty sure he's close to crawling since now when he lunges forward he gets into an all fours position and tries hard to push himself forward.

Enjoy the non-mobile time. LO is semi-mobile now and when he's mobile he's going to be all over the place!

  • Nope! LO didn't even start rolling until 5.5 months, and he's not sitting up unassisted yet. Pedi says it's because he's so tall (98th percentile), so it's harder for him to stabilize himself. I'm not concerned!

  • No, she hates sitting.  She would much rather stand!
