Eliminating urine smell from carpet...

Any suggestions?  I have tried to use enzyme based formulations such as bac out.  These helped a lot but there is still some smell remaining.  (Let's just say that my dog has issues).  From google I have read variations of using vinegar, baking soda, and peroxide.  Anyone have a tried and true method from experience.  Thanks!

  • I have only had luck with Nature's Miracle.

My cat is the one with issues :P

  • Wet the spot lightly, but so the entire stain is wet. Then sprinkle with baking soda until the the baking soda stays dry on top (liquid is all absorbed). Let sit for a few hours or overnight, then vacuum up. This works with our pet problems! But, the carpet is VERY clean in those spots when we are done :)

  • Don't know how EF it is, but i had some vet friends recommend "urine off" for fabrics specifcally over nature's miracle.  so far so good.  i also have cat craziness as far as urine is concerned.  fyi - for those who also have cat craziness, i've tried amitryptiline, buspuirone and now prozac and the prozac half dose is the only thing that's worked and not totally drowsed my cat out.  fyi.  :-)  anyone who'se not able to find a medical reason for the probs...  sigh  good luck everyone!

  • Thanks.  I think I will try the baking soda tonight since I have some on hand.  It is a spot that has been through multiple pee offenses.  I clean it each time by blotting then cleaning with my spot bot.  I have also used bac out and another enzyme based urine eliminator from the rug docor brand as well as recently renting a rug doctor and cleaning all of the carpets.  This one spot is the only yucky one that remains.  : (
  • lytedark ... I feel your medication woes.  My dog has been through a myriad of tests since September and the end diagnosis is "most likely cognitive dysfunction (like alzheimers) or a possible brain tumor."  Ugh.  $2000 later we are now trying a drug called anipryl.  If this doesn't work we may have to  put him down.  He is 13 y.o. and urinating in the house is not his only symptom.  On good days he is confused and paces around the house looking for God only knows what, eating and drinking uncontrollably, stealing food from my children and peeing everywhere.  On good days he likes to sleep on the sofa and get up occasionally to eat.  : (  So far there has been no luck on the anipryl but it's only been two weeks.  we have also tried clomicalm and some tranquilizer as well as a diabetes medication when he was incorrectly diagnosed with diabetes insipidus.  Anyone else out there putting up with similar circumstances because you treat your pets like family ... good luck and bless your hearts!  It's not easy.
