Cloth Diapering?

I keep going back and forth with my decision to use cloth diapers. I mean, it sounds good one minute, then the next, it doesn't sound too good.

What are yall's opinions on cloth diapering?

For those of you who have decided/have actually used cloth diapers, what has your experience been like?

Re: Cloth Diapering?

  • We used cloth with our first and plan to use the same diapers again with our second baby on the way. I had a great experience with them and wouldn't change a thing.

I used Flip diapers (ordered on Cotton Babies.com) which are made by the same people who make BumGenius. I decided on them because I liked the idea of not having to wash a whole diaper after each diaper change. They also fit from about 8lbs to potty training, so you don't need to buy multiple sizes. You just pull the insert out and toss it in a wet bag (ours was the Planet Wise hanging diaper bag ordered on Amazon). Any time our LO pooped, I tossed both the insert and the cover in the wet bag. Since most diapers are just wet, having the inserts and covers just made sense to me.

I had 5 covers with snaps, 24 inserts, a hanging wet bag, and 3 large packs of baby washcloths to use as wipes. Total was less than $160 for everything. The savings was significant versus disposables, and we'll be reusing all of the same diapers again. They still look brand new after 2 years of use. I washed diapers 2 or 3 times a week with Purex Free and Clear. There is a cloth diaper board on here that is great and can answer any specific questions you have.

  • Ditto to checking out the Cloth Diapering board... there is a ton of info there!

We use one size pocket diapers with my son and LOVE them.  Sure, you get a little extra laundry but the savings will make your head explode... in a good way.  Stick out tongue

My husband was a little hesitant at first but he quickly became 100% on board.  They really are easy and no more "gross" than disposables.  We use disposables  at daycare (three mornings a week) and one at night because he is a solid 12 hour sleeper and we need the absorbancy for that long.  But we spent very little on our cloth dipes and they have already paid for themselves at least 3X over.  We will be using them again for this baby.

We've also NEVER had diaper rash.  And we haven't gotten there yet but rumor has it that cloth diapered kiddos are easier to potty train... bonus!

  • We have CD'd our son for the past 20 months and I can honestly say it's one of my best decisions so far!  We use a variety of different one size and size pockets and have half velcro, half snaps.

Have you looked into a diaper trial, those a great ways to see if you want to commit to purchasing a stash.  The money up front is expensive, but I spent about $50 a month during my pregnancy and then didn't have to worry once DS was here and only pick up a few here and there if there is something I want to try or a pattern I "must" have :)

Check out the CD board, the ladies are wonderful there!

This is exactly how I feel about our experience the first time around, too.  I'm actually a little excited to bring "the stash" back out for a second go-round!  We used a different system (prefolds and fitteds until DS outgrew what we had, then switched to Bum Genius organic all-in-ones) but still had a great experience.

  • Thanks, ladies! I'm definitely going to check out the CD board. Now, I just have to convince everyone in my family that I'm not going crazy.

We CD and it's so much easier than I thought it would be.  We mainly used prefolds and covers until DD was one, but also used a mix of pockets, AIOs and fitteds.

Some people think that it's gross to have to rinse a poopy diaper, but most people don't know that you're legally supposed to rinse poopy 'sposies before you throw them away, too.

Like the pp said: try out the trial from Jillians Drawers.  You might think you want to use one type of diaper, but something totally different might work best for your baby.

Unless they will be changing most of your child's diapers, it really isn't their concern. We didn't even mention that we were cloth diapering. I just ordered the stuff and started cloth diapering. They only noticed if they came over and happened to see me change a diaper. MIL probably still doesn't know 2 years later. It really isn't that big of a deal. At baby showers if I received a pack of diapers, I graciously accepted them because I knew I could either use them for travel or pass them along to a friend if I wanted to.

I've found that, with most things that I do that are different or non-mainstream, it has been easiest for us just to make a decision and go with it without involving our family or trying to gain their approval.

  • We cloth diapered both boys.  Check out the cloth diapering board and also Jillian's Drawers.  They are awesome to work with and give a lot of great tips and advice.  Both of my boys were potty trained by 21 months so the early potty training was a big plus too.  I just kept my diaper pail and switched to underwear at 21  months (after months of putting them on the toilet at consistent times each day...i.e. before and after naps and meals).  They got the hang of it really quickly.

I would also suggest a diaper sprayer.  It helps me to make the job not gross at all and my diapers are stain free after 2 kiddos.  I used Bum Genius with 2 inserts at night until DS started complaining that they were too tight on his thighs.  Now he sleeps in a pull up.

A number of our family members and friends have been vocal in pointing out that they think we are silly new first time parents who don't now better. It's ok. It kinda just makes me more stubborn to give it a good shot. It's encouraging though to here from the family members that did the cloth diapers the really old skool way (cloth and pins) and how excited they are to see how its changed.

  • I have decided to cloth diaper. I'm really happy with my decision and wouldn't have it any other way.

There are so many different reasons to cloth diaper. You need to find one that suits you & your family so you can get excited about it. GL on making a decision.

  • I am planning on it, and a lot of my friends have done it, too.  Some people think I am crazy, but I never really care what people think anyway!

I am at a loss with registering for them, though...at first I was going to get newborn fitteds, but they are so expensive...and I feel like I am going to have a big baby -- so contemplating doing sposies for the first week or so, and maybe until she hits 8 lbs...and using the Flip or some other hybrid system.  I feel like it would be crazy to spend $300 on newborn fitteds and covers if she will outgrow them in 2 months or less... although changing pampers newborn sposies at 12 dipes a day would run about 80-90 a month.  If I do 24 prefolds and 6 covers it will be a little over $100...so I am thinking that will be my route.  Then onto something different....choices! choices!

  • We're cloth diapering and it is mainly to save money.  We are getting a lot of baby stuff from our relatives so our registry for our baby showers is mainly cloth diapers.

I CD my DD and have been doing it since she was 2 months old. My husband and I love it. It started out to save money and the environment but damn, they are so cute, too! (bonus!)

We have some pockets, which is what we started with but we have way more WAHMS now. (work at home moms make beautiful diapers in lovely prints for girls and boys.) We have not had any issues with CDing. We put the diaper on her, and when it's wet or dirty, we throw it in a wet bag that is waterproof and zips up. Then when it's full, we throw it all in the washer and wash it (as directed) with CD safe detergent. Easy peasy!

  • So glad we did with DS.  Saved more money than you could imagine..considering DS wasn't in underwear until a bit over 3.  He rarely, rarely had diaper rash due to less chemicals in the diapers.  We are helping the environment.  And...we already have diapers for baby #2!

We did get some side eyes when we told people we were going to cloth diaper, but once people see the diapers are more than cloths and pins from years ago, they changed their minds.
