2nd Trimester

Classes!

Hi Ladies!

I'm a FTM, and there are about 10-12 classes available to new parents at our hospital. Although I don't want to take all of them, I find myself looking at several. Geeked -- Childbirth Prep, Breastfeeding, Back to Work & Breastfeeding, & Infant Safety & CPR.

Are any of these not worth the time & energy? Are there any subjects in which I might be better off just reading a book or asking a friend?

 Any opinions appreciated! Thanks! Smile

Re: Classes!

  • Are they free? If cost isn't a factor then I don't think it would hurt to go to them, especially as a FTM. I'm a FTM and my Husband are taking baby basics, labor and delivery, breastfeeding, an infant CPR class, and the hospital tour. I can't let you know if they're a waste of time until April- mid May. :) I'm assuming the hospital tour will be a waste of time since my Sister gave birth there last June, but I want to feel as prepared as possible.

  • I would definitely take the CPR class! You will not regret taking it. The breastfeeding class is a great one to take. I am going to take it this time since I didn't get to with DD. I am already CPR certified because of my job so I am not taking it.

  • i liked childbirth (ours had BF within it) - and the infant CPR was good too.

  • I'm already certified in infant and child CPR because of my job, so I'm not worried about that.  We did take the breastfeeding class (tonight actually) and while it had some good info, it was not worth the cost IMO.  I could've read a book and gotten basically the same info.
  • I signed up for the bradley childbirth classes.  For what I read online and have heard from other people they cover a lot of the topics you mentioned (nutrition, breastfeeding, relaxation techniques ect...).  It is a 12 week course and covers alot of info, so it might be a good alternative to taking and paying for multiple classes.

A friend also told me that at the hospital she delivered at the nurses were very good at  giving her helpful breastfeeding information/positioning baby and even had lactation consultants who came by to check on her.

So I would see what kind of support you can get before you sign up and pay for lots of classes.
