Pregnant after a Loss

Have you given up coffee?

During my 1st pregnancy I continued to drink coffee although I cut down to 1 cup a day and even that was half decaf and everything went fine.

Now that I've experienced a m/c I'm nervous about every little thing this time and feel like I'd better cut it out entirely. So today is day 1... the mornings will be tough but I think I can do this.

Anyone else cut it out or did you just cut down?

Re: Have you given up coffee?

  • I cut it out for my 1st pregnancy but didn't with my loss.  So I am giving it up now.  But honestly, it's mostly b/c I now have an aversion to coffee.  It makes my stomach turn!  I think 1 cup a day is fine.

  • I have just cut it down to one cup a day.

  • I cut down... I cut out my first pregnancy that ended in a loss so it made no difference.  I only drink one half-caf cup of coffee most mornings (and no soda) so it isn't like I'm overindulging but I did not cut out.

  • I have cut back to one half Caff cup of coffee a day.  I do not drink soda, so I don't think I'll be overdoing anything.  I do have a pretty substantial addiction to green tea.  On some days, I'll drink 2 cups in the afternoon and then more at night.  I have switched from regular green tea to decaf green tea... so I can still enjoy it daily.
  • I was good about avoiding caffeine until about the 2nd trimester, and even then my consumption of caffeine was few and far between.  Now in the 3rd, and totally exhausted, I will have 1 to 2 cups a day (mostly 1).  I will rotate though and go for decaf half the time.  I'm just so tired from not sleeping well, I need that boost to get me going some mornings!
  • For the most part I have no desire to drink it anyway. I do get a decaf every once in a while but it is very rare.
  • I gave it up.  I did give in and have a half cup a couple weeks back (it was a gourment coffee, strawberry & white chocolate, that I bought for DH for Valentines day).  I hadn't had it in 3 months.  After I drank it, I experienced mild cramping all day.  My doctor suggested drinking 24-32 oz of water and putting my feet up because I could be dehydrated and that would cause irritible uterus.  Since I have a history of preterm labor they took precaution, but I specifically remembering the nurse telling me "no caffiene" (it heightens dehydration if you haven't drank enough I guess).  So, no more coffee for me.  Even if it wasn't the cause, it was the only thing I did differently that day.

I've heard of women that drink it throughout (limiting to 1 cup a day).  But if anything, I'd stick with decaf.  If you just *like* coffee, maybe try the coffee flavored hot chocolates?

  • I still have some caffeine, usually one diet soda or some tea every day.  I have a cup of coffee every now and then and I dont feel too guilty about it.

  • I've definitely cut down but not out. I drink 1/2 to a whole cup in the morning. It helped with first tri headaches and constipation. I did cut out soda which was hard. I love me a Coke but I've been really good about giving that up. Caffeine in moderation is ok.

  • I don't drink plain coffee normally, but I would have one coffee a weekend at starbucks and maybe one can of pop a week while eating out.  I have pretty much since stopped.  I have a sip here and there if my husband gets something good, but am also concerned about drinking all of that sugar...

If I was a regular drinker, I would probably just cut back.

  • I have cut back on coffee. I will have one to two cups every few days, sometimes not for a week. I don't feel bad about it for two reasons 1) I like a little coffee with my cream and 2) caffeine in moderation is completely fine. I didn't drink coffee/soda with my last two pregnancies and I lost both of them. It has nothing to do with miscarriages.

  • I was already weaning myself off caffeine when I found out I was pregnant this time, so I just went ahead and quit.  I asked my doc about it the other day, and he said that "1 cup of coffee or equivalent a day is usually fine.  But 2 cups a day or more does start to have a m/c association.  So, technically you can have a cup if you really want it..."  So I decided it really isn't that important to me. LOL

Honestly, drinking decaf did help me for a while.  The whole placebo effect is pretty amazing.  But then it started making me nauseous, so I just gave it up completely.  I miss coffee.

  • I am an occasional coffee drinker and giving it up completely. I'm too nervous after my loss. I'm even avoiding decaf after reading about how they process the beans. I am completely and totally paranoid for this pregnancy. :-/

  • I cut out my daily cup only because it was making more sick than I already was.  I still will have an iced coffee on occassion.  I can handle those just fine.

  • It's good to see that a lot of you are still enjoying coffee b/c I'm not sure that I'll be able to cut it out completely. Just my one cup a day does wonders for me! But I will try to at least limit it to not every day.  I feel like I'm so over cautious right now and no matter what my Dr. says, I still tend to want to be extra careful. It's going to be a long 9mths at this rate!

  • I was a caffeine addict but when I got my BFP I switched to decaf. I expected headaches and to be really sleepy but I was pleasantly surprised that I had neither (like Mrs. Ike said, the placebo effect is pretty amazing). Now I have an aversion so I'm not drinking it at all. If I get a headache I'll drink a Coke--but that's not much caffeine. I'd drink more Cokes but I don't want the sugar and I'm avoiding all artificial sweeteners while pregnant, so diet isn't an option for me.

  • I had mostly cut it out while TTC this last round anyway.  I'd only have it when on photoshoots or on the weekends.  So I've cut it completely, but still have the occasional black or chai tea.  No cokes or anything.

  • I used to drink a lot of coffee so I didn't really feel like I could cut it down and leave it at that, so I just gave it up instead.  I was glad I did because I found out around week 7 that heart palpitations are very common in pregnancy and I get them very badly, so if I was drinking caffeine on top of that I think it would really bother me.  HTH!

  • I went cold turkey. Now I drink coffee maybe once a week. Occasionally sweet tea or a coke slushie.
