swelling..repost from june 2012 board

anyone else experiencing it? i got home from going out to dinner about an hour and a half ago and my feet and ankles are huge. weird thing is i didn't do anything today, i am on vacation and just played with my 2 and 5 month old nephews on and off all day. weird that i would be fine at 5 when we left for dinner and then at 9 when we got home they were huge. i'm drinking water and i put an ice pack on them and put them up, hoping it goes down in the morning. any advice on what the signs are i should call the doctor and get concerned? thanks

  • The only thing I could think of is if either leg is crampy or sore at all- I would call. And maybe give your OB a heads up in the morning.

  • sounds like edema...that happened to me while I was flying...I elevated my feet and the swelling went down...I would still check with the doc, though.
  • When I was pregnant with DD, I had a lot of swelling starting at week 27 until delivery. My feet didn't look normal again until after I delivered DD. I of course dramatically decreased my sodium intake and would elevate my feet and was even put off work a month early. I hope your case is different then mine was. I am really dreading being pregnant this Summer with possibly having swelling again! I only had a few pairs of shoes that fit me since my feet were so big! lol

i could have written this post myself.  i ended up with pre-eclampsia and actually was in the hospital an extra week strapped to the bed with these compression things on my legs to bring down the swelling.  that's an extreme case, but definitely limit your sodium intake as much as you possibly can.  elevating the feet never did much for me, though i did try to follow that advice.  my calves were so big DH said "they're not cankles, they're TANK-les."

  • thanks everyone! when i got up this morning after elevating them all night and last evening, they were pretty much back to normal. from my research this is what is supposed to happen and not to worry too much until it doesn't go away over night. i'll def talk to doc at the next appointment!

  • I think the rule of thumb is if you gain over 5lbs in a day.  I was extremely swollen from about 5 months on with DD.  My ankels and calves looked like tree trunks.  It was awful.  I was told to push on the swollen area and if it popped back out right away not to worry.  Maybe you ate something really salty?  Just keep your feet up all during the night.  Temperature and humidity may also be a factor if you live in a warm area.  Drink plenty of fluids.  If you stay swollen your OB will probably keep an eye on your blood pressure to make sure you don't have pre-e.  Swelling is one of the unfun symptoms of pregnancy.  I know how miserable it can be and I hope it goes away quickly for you!
