2nd Trimester

Do I need a maternity bathing suit?

Totally excited that we just booked our babymoon!  Now I am wondering if I need a maternity bikini/tankini/something.  The ocean will be too cold for full-on submersion, but I plan to wade and splash with my husband and dogs.   We like to run on the beach, too, so normally, I wear a bikini top and bottoms and then running shorts/skort over it for coverage (unless I am actually just swimming).

I am just starting my 6th month and wearing mostly stretchy non-maternity in my regular size.  (Bought 2 pairs of maternity work pants and 2 pairs of maternity jeans, but all the tops & dresses I've tried have been too big.)  Out trip is in 5 weeks, so I will be just entering 3rd tri.  I am due July 2 and not planning another vacation once LO arrives.  Do I need to buy a maternity bathing suit?

Re: Do I need a maternity bathing suit?

  • I was due with my son in July and I purchased one b/c my parents have a pool (I was there a TON.)  I didn't end up needing one with DD since she was due in May.  But I'll 100% need more than 1 this time with a Sept baby (parents pool, plus parties and a beach vacation in OBX.)

You can find some really cute & cheap ones at Target.

  • If you can get by with your normal suit I'd go for it.  I'm going on a trip this weekend wearing my normal suit.

  • Even though you're not planning another vaca, do you think you'll want to/have the chance to swim at all in the summer before your due date?  I am not normally big into swimming, but the community pool was absolutely my saving grace near the end of my pregnancy with DS.  Being in the water takes all the pressure of your belly off your back, and it feels absolutely amazing.  Plus, as you know, it will be hot and you will be big, which will make you extra uncomfortable.  If you think you might get more use out of a maternity suit later in that way, then yes, absolutely buy one.  I got mine at target, and though I don't remember how much it was exactly, I do remember that it wasn't nearly as expensive as I expected a mat suit to be.

  • I bought a super cute maternity swimsuit "tankini style" and then bought a skirt bottom. I have tons of nice swimsuits but this one is one of my favorites and I cannot wait to wear it this summer = )

  • With my first I just bought a bigger bikini- my boobs got a lot bigger so.. I just got it from Ross and it was a regular one,not maternity and it fit fine.
  • I guess the question is if you care about your belly being exposed or not. When I was pg with #1 I was COVERED in red stretch marks. It was bad. So wearing a bikini was not an option (and probably never will be again). So I got a one piece maternity bathing suit.

  • I plan on rocking my bikini and letting my bump feel the sun :)  I have a cris-cross tie back top, and a larger bottom if my arse decides to expand.  I just hate the feeling of wet spandex on my body...even at my chunkiest I rocked a bikini.

me too girl!  i absolutely refuse to wear a one piece or a tankini, all the ones I've seen are hideous!   I dnno if I'll be able to fit into my normal bikinis (boobs!), but they have some very cute maternity 2 pieces on Amazon- brands are Prego and Seraphine

  • I have a maternity one-piece that I adore. It is homely, but supportive to boobs and belly. I did lots of swimming late in my PG with DS and this PG, I with this PG I hope to swim most summer days up until delivery. So, for me it is a MUST. I also have a two-piece, but it is not supportive enough in the bust.
  • i had a tankini i wore when i took a pregnancy water aerobics swim class, only because i didn't want to be judged by other women in the class.

when i was on vacation with DH and my girlfriends, even at 6 months, i wore the same string bikini i always wore.  if any stranger gave me weird looks, i just looked at them and said "do you think this bikini makes me look fat?"  (seriously.)  then they usually laughed.

  • Guess it depends on what you feel comfortable in. If you can still rock a bikini than I would just make sure it fits properly. You don't want anything falling out on your beach jogs, lol!

  • I got a black tankini style top at Motherhood that was only about $25 and I love it.  I just wear my black bikini bottom with it.  I like that I can wear it post-partum too (you may get lucky and have no stretch marks but if you do, then you'll be taking the sad walk from bikini to tankini land like I did).  Swimming for exercise in the 3rd trimester is the BEST.
  • Mermaid Maternity has some cute maternity swimwear options. Check out their maternity rash guards - I'm planning on wearing a bikini top, but putting the short sleeve rash guard over it when I want more coverage.
