I know my aunt (she is a great decorator) has a similar situation and she chose really cute and kid appropriate decor that's really classy. Her daughters are 15-23 now and she has pink/brown towels with high-heel and shopping theme shower curtain with maribu on it to give you an idea (she changes it often, that's just one that I can think of). I would do a combo.
We do a lot of entertaining, but we're not super formal.
Right now, the tile in the bathroom is puke yellow and black (original prewar tile, just had it regrouted so it's staying for a while). We found these yellow tiles with white kind of swirl pattern at Target that look really good with the tiles. For the kid theme, we had been thinking frogs or monkeys (will depend on what we find when we look though). Would it be weird to use those towels and then have a cutesy shower curtain and bathmat and other things in there?
Or, is it better to keep a normal shower curtain and towels and then just have a kiddy bathmat, toothbrush holder, and things like that?
We are in the same predicament with our house, the guest bathroom is James bathroom also. What we did is more adult theme, with nice colors and stars, but we did a quote sticker from Peter Pan to make it a little more child friendly and to go with the star theme, here is a link to the quote sticker
We dressed ours as a guest bath. We already had plain white towels with embroidered hand towels, so we figured we may as well use those. We added black bath mats and a black and white damask curtain.
Plus, how much time does LO really spend in there? 20 minutes a day? I'd just do a generic color theme that you could eventually kidi-fy if/when you get a bigger place with more bathrooms one day.
I'm a SS. What we did is go with accessories which are quirky and kid-safe, but adult appropriate. We have a frame we switch out periodically so it's some adult-ish and some kid-ish (right now it's still a print of cookies that say XOXO fram Valentine's, whoops). The accessories are plastic, mostly frosted, but they say things like 'soap' and 'water'. I do still need to paint though. Meh.
Our guest bathroom is also the kids bathroom. It's adult decor throughout. My kids could care less what the towels and shower curtains are, so I decorate it to my taste.
