What is involved in a non-stress test?

40w3d today. Officially the longest I have ever been pregnant, as DD was born at 40w2d.  Stick out tongue

We're going in for my non-stress test today.  What should I expect?

Thanks!

  • I have had 2. All they did was hook up 2 monitors around my belly. One were the top of the fundus is to monitor contractions and the other monitor was positioned where the LO's heartbeat was located. You lay on your left side and have a jeopardy type buzzer that you click everytime you feel the bean move. I know mine were for 20 mins at a time but they can go shorter/longer depending on the movement and how LO is reacting to contractions if you're having any. Good luck!

This, but they had me lay on my back and press the buzzer for contractions instead.

This exactly. It's no big deal. Just a little monitoring. And for me it was a MIN of 20 mins. (I had to stay on longer, because baby fell asleep and they need at least 20 mins of active monitoring).

    Enjoy hearing baby's heartbeat!

  • I was slightly reclined in an armchair, and didn't have to press a buzzer at all. They just monitored his heart rate and my contractions. My LO fell asleep as well, and they had me drink a soda to wake him up. I ended up being hooked up to the monitors for about an hour.
  • Thanks guys! I'm wondering if they'll let me get an ultrasound too.  The doctor mentioned it, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

  • For my practice it depends on how the nonstress test goes. The ultrasound is to check fluid levels.

  • I have a biophysical profile set up for next Monday (when I'll be one week overdue) and I know that includes an ultrasound to check fluid levels... but I don't think a typical NST includes one.

Seriously hoping both of our babies decide to come out VERY soon :)

I'm now 6 days more pregnant than I've ever been - if I get to my BPP next Monday, heaven help all those around me :) Also just found my very first stretch marks on my hip last night. Sigh.......

  • I had an ultra sound with my NST, it was the first time I saw him since 28 weeks. It was amazing to see how much he grew!!

  • I had a NST a few days before my ds was born.. I laid on a hosptial bed, the nurse strapped two monitors around me and I was told to relax and stay relatively still.  About an hour later it was over.. would have been shorter but the monitor slipped (I didn't notice for a while) so the test was extended to get the length of monitoring required. I did not have a buzzer.
