Old nursery furniture

I adore my in laws, seriously they are awesome. But my MIL had saved all of DH's nursery furniture (30+ yrs old), crib and playpen, and let me know they wanted to use if they ever watched LO. At 30 weeks along, I let her that it was sweet she wanted to use the same things but a lot of things have changed and it may not meet standards  My FIL agreed and said DH and I can have final say if we feel comfortable. LO has now arrived and they sent me a picture with all the furniture set up and a caption that said "A soda can can't fit through the spindles, so we are good to go". DH told them we would get them a pack and play to use instead, but now they want to use the furniture... help! What can we say to not hurt their feelings?

    Yikes. Yeah, they need to dispose of the crib. Even if the slats are spaced properly, there's no way it meets all of the other current safety standards. The safety standards were just revised again like a year ago, so even cribs that are just a few years old don't necessarily meet all the new standards. And if the IL's crib is painted, there's probably lead in the paint. There's a lot more to the current standards than just the spacing of the slats. One thing is the slats have to be stronger now. If it's a drop side crib, those are banned now and it's illegal to sell them. I would read up on the current standards so you can easily say why this ancient crib is not okay to use. Tell them thanks, but no thanks and set up the pnp at their house.

    Yup, and this is why we are now staying at a hotel when we visit.  I would have your DH just say the furniture will not work and if they don't get it, I would not be leaving my LO there until they decide to listen you to you guys.
