Pregnant after a Loss

Colace dosage question

I got some colace tonight because I've been having trouble going #2  (sorry TMI) - although to be honest I have been so sick and eating so little, maybe I haven't had to really go.  I started taking zofran last night and I heard that can make constipation worse, so I want to deal with this issue.

Anyway, the bottle says adults can take 1-6 pills - all at once or spread out.  Do I really need 6 pills??  Anyone have a dose they found effective?  I don't want to take more than I need, but I want it to work.  6 pills just seems like a lot.  Thanks for any advice ladies!

Re: Colace dosage question

  • Hmmm..., I have the generic form and it says 1-2 pills. My doc said to try one at night and one in the morning. Six seems like a lot to me....hmmm.

  • I had some bad constipation in the beginning so I got some colace.  The bottle I have says 1-3 in a 24 hour period.  I started out taking 2 at one time and then if I didn't go in 8-12 hours, I would take the 3rd pill allotted.  Does it say what the mgs are on yours?

  • I'm an ICU nurse and the dosage we use for all of our patients is 100mg twice a day. Just so you know colace will not make you go to the bathroom, it is only going to make it easier if you needed to. It is a stool softner and not a laxative. Not sure which you are looking for. But I would recommend 100mg twice a day with plenty of water. HTH!

It says each pill is 50mg.  Maybe I will try 2 and see what happens.

Okay, so since each pill is 50 mg, I can take 2 to start.  Plenty of water is my biggest problem - with my morning sickness I have hardly been able to keep any food or liquid down.  Hopefully, the zofran will help with that though.  Thanks for your input!!

  • Like PP said, regular colace is just a stool softner. I had EXTREMELY bad constipation last week. I am talking sore abdomen, extreme back ache, and tender muscles. It felt like stabbing pains any time baby moved, and I hardly wanted to eat. I took peri-colace, which is a stool softner AND laxative (and it was approved by my ob/gyn). It is like colace, but the "peri" part is the laxative part.  It says the dosage is 4, but that you can split it up into 2 and 2. I did that for 2 days, and got hardly any relief, and when I took all 4 in the evening (like recommended), the next day I was finally able to go a good amount.

    GL!!!! Constipation is awful :

  • I'm a nurse and we give colace to almost all our patients... standard dose is 100mg twice a day (one in AM, one in PM). Hope that helps? I would not take more than 3 in one day... step up your water intake.
