2nd Trimester

Diapers???

Ok, so hubby and I are stocking up on diapers before our LO arrives...any suggests from moms out there on which brand to use (huggies, pampers, or luvs--or store brand)?

Since we buy in bulk 200+ per pack of diapers I want to get the best value, but also want them to work. We are buying size 2 as we don't know how big he will be when I deliver or how fast he will grow after that.

All advice is welcome!

Re: Diapers???

  • For newborn-about 3 months I love Pampers Swaddlers Diapers! After that we use Kirkland brand

The only brands I have really not liked are the Target brand!! and Luvs arent my first pick, but not the worst.

  • Pampers swaddlers are great for the lil tiny ones, then you can judge what kind of poop your little one does- serious poonamis- stick w/ swaddlers (the dry weave sort of stuff really does the best keeping it in.  W/ my second, she was much tidier when she pooped, so the luvs worked great for her.   Also, do not buy more than one pack of newborns or you'll most likely have a ton left unused before baby outgrows them!
  • The "cheap" diapers are just that in this house! Pampers swaddlers and pampers thick sensitive wipes...and nothing else.  We made the mistake of getting the cheapies, a ton of them and we regretted it and ended up donating them!

  • We used pampers swaddlers and pampers wipes for ds... I tried the less expensive brands once and was not happy. Not that ds is a toddler we have moved on from pampers to huggies pull ups.

  • We're a boy family and love Luvs! They are thin and get the job done well. The sides are nice and stretchy and we like the light powder scent. We also used Target Up & Up but they changed the price and diaper count, to their benefit of course. :) The Babies R Us brand were awful, IMO. Walmart's brand were ok, but they were bulky and a little stiff. Meijer brand were a little stiff as well, but their version of Pull-Ups rock.

We never tried the Kirkland brand, but we do use their wipes. For what it's worth, if you go with the Costco wipes get a container of Huggies wipes in the plastic box container. Snap off the plastic top of the Costco wipes and place in the Huggies box. Viola... a nice wipes container!

Our hospital uses Pampers so we stock up on the newborn ones they provide because both of our boys were out of newborn pretty quick. Amazon can be great if you're looking for a deal. I just got a 300 box of size 1s Luvs for $30 delivered with free two day shipping. No more lugging diapers home!

  • something I would caution you about .. being a mom expecting # 4, you might waste a ton of money - is there an account you could just deposit money into - as if you buy diapers in large quantitiues- you risk the fact that they might not fit them.

I found size 1's were where you will start - I have had a 9 lbs 2 oz baby and still used NB. like for a day or two so a pack of say 30's.  size 1's you use tons.  My kids were 9 lbs 2 oz, 7 lbs 14 oz and 7 lbs..

  • Pampers from N-2. Then a combo of Luvs and Pampers (Luvs during the day and a Pamper at night) from size 3-4. Size 5 I used Target brand, but still used a Pamper at night.

  • I've had nearly every mom I know tell me Pampers Swaddlers and/or Cruisers.  We've been buying diapers since we got our BFP.  A friend of mine suggested the following:

1 pack newborn, 2 boxes size 1, 4 boxes size 3, 6 boxes size 3.  She didn't have to buy diapers for eons.  I also saved receipts so that if I overbought a size, I can exchange with minimal hassle.

Don't stock up too much because your kid might be allergic or sensitive to certain brands. Also, size 1's are your friend.

Agreed... If you really want to stock up, I'd definitely get the Swaddler's sensitive, or another free-and-clear brand just in case. And definitely get some size 1s. I think DS was in 1s until 3-4 months.

  • swaddlers are the most popular brand.  you should get some smaller sizes for the early days.  maybe get the smaller bags for those ones until you see how big your little baby is :)

  • We're doing mostly cloth.

But when she is first born & still has her umbilical cord, we'll do huggies pure & natural.

  • It is really hard to predict what kind will work, how many you will need, etc....  Luckily my son stayed in Pampes Swaddlers through size 2.  When he went into size 3 we made move to Cruisers and he got an awful rash.  Also, continued to have rash with Huggies.  By the time he turned one we switched to Target brand based on a recommendation and are still using these.  We are still in size 4 during day, and I use Huggies overnights in size 5 overnight.  My son came home from the hospital at 7 lb 4 oz and was in a size 1 already.  It was nice that I had enough size ones to last for a bit, but really it was no big deal to go online and order more or make an exciting trip out with baby to buy diapers.
