Pregnant after a Loss

Dental work?

HI Ladies! I am scheduled to have my wisdom teeth taken out Friday but have been doing a lot of debating on it. I already have issues with high bp and since I obviously can't be put out or given pain meds it makes me worry my bp is going to shoot way up because of pain. They will numb it before hand but I'm feeling pretty nervous about it. Anyone had anything similar done?

Re: Dental work?

  • I was put under general anesthesia for mine.  I don't know how they are able to do it without an xray?  Do they know that you are pregnant?  Honestly, unless you are having issues I wouldn't do it pregnant.

As far as I know as long as you aren't having any type of pain/infection there is no risk keeping your wisdom teeth in for 6 more months.  Some people never even get them taken out.

I may just be biased but I had a lot of pain with my wisdom teeth surgery.  I developed a dry socket and needed lots of pain meds to manage it. Plus, it is a surgery.  I didn't know anyone who wasn't fully knocked out for it or at least heavily sedated.

  • Thank you for the response. I think I am leaning way more toward cancelling!
  • My OB gave me a sheet saying all dental work was pretty much fine. If you have doubts call your OB and get some info. Sounds like they are impacts or close to infection if they want to take them out now. Most dentist will wait if your are pg, sounds like there might be an issue considering the urgency.

I called my OB earlier to get their opinion especailly with the bp issue. I'm still waiting to hear what they have to say about it! But that was kind of my wonder; if they were close to causing a major problem. They have been in for at least a year after a long struggle to get in!

My teeth stink, after DS and Nicholas I had cavities and a root canal. For me pregnancy only makes my teeth worse. Hopefully. O get some answers and get them out with some peace about the decision. It would be awful to wait and have it get worse.

  • Did your dr ok this???  I'm just really surprised, unless you are having serious problems with your wisdom teeth right now, that your dental office is having you still come in pregnant.

I had a cavity at my last check up, and even though it was small and I would only need a little novicaine, they are waiting to fix it until after the baby is born....  His policy is that any unnecissary work is postponed... even minor cavities apparently.

This is my dentist too. I had a message today reminding me of my filling tomorrow. I totally forgot. I phoned them and said that I was pregnant. They said they would re-schedule when I was in my third trimester, but only after me talking to my doctor about it. I have to check with her and see what she says. This was a super small cavity that isn't even bothering me so I am probably going to wait until after.

  • If the Dentist said they need to come out asap I would suspect there is an infection so I would get them out. Maybe double check to see if it could wait until after the baby is born. I wasn't knocked out for mine and all four were impacted and I had no issues. I wasn't PgAL at the time though so I understand your worry.

  • I would definitely reschedule.  I was put under during my surgery and I'm so glad I was.  The recovery was rough and took quite a few weeks.  I took vicodin every day for a few days due to the pain.  The recovery can be tough.  I would put it off if you could.
  • My OB said dental work after the 2nd trimester is fine (I happen to get my first cavity EVER during this pregnancy).  I chose to hold off until after the baby was born simply because I didn't want to be uncomfortable in my dentist's chair; having to pee every 10 minutes.

I will say that oral surgery is a LOT different than filling a cavity.  I wouldn't feel comfortable having my wisdom teeth pulled during pregnancy!  I had also wound up with a dry socket (like a PP) and I was in tons of pain.  I had to take tons of Advil to get me through it.

I know you said you rescheduled it already, but I will say IF you're in a lot of pain from the wisdom teeth, don't put it off just because of pregnancy either.  I'd just keep an eye on everything

  • Hmm. They gave me a numbing agent when they had to do a CLEANING & it hurt like a b!tch. I honestly don't know what to tell you. Sounds like you're in a pretty rough position.
