Class B Topical Cream

I wrote a post yesterday about this.

My derm prescribed me Azelex (its an acne cream that's fairly new). She said it was okay to use during pregnancy. When I pick it up at the pharmacy today, I ask the pharmacist about it and he says it relatively safe b/c it's a class B drug.

Would you use a class B drug during pregnancy? I need something for this hrrible acne, but I also don't want to take any chances.

Re: Class B Topical Cream

  • If it were a more serious condition you were treating, would you be taking a class B drug during pregnancy?  I have some other health issues and have taken class C drugs after running them by the MFM.  Most of the time, the MFM says "there is absolutely nothing to worry about."

I of course have tried to avoid anything unnecessary during pregnancy, but sometimes it can't be helped.  If the problem is bothering you that much, then yes, I absolutely would.

My bigger concern is that you say it is a "newer" drug.  How do they have enough information to classify it if it is new?  My migraine med is rated class C simply because there is not enough research to change its rating, and it's been around for at least 10 years.

I saw newer b/c that's what the pharmacist told me today- he said its only been tested on animals, not on humans. Acne has always bothered me and now I feel more helpless than ever because I can't get my peels or apply Retin-A, which somewhat kept things under control.

    I don't know what to do =/

  • Have you tried more holistic methods? I normally use the beno- and sacr- (dont know how to spell) acids fo rmy acne but becaus eit just makes it worse during pregnancy I moved to sulfur soap and alcohol-free toner. I t has stopped/slowed my cystic acne and reduced/deswelled my whiteheads as well as comepletely preventing any black heads. I wash once day and night and it's keeps my acne at bay. Hopes this helps.
As to the drug anything that hasnt got a chance to be used on humans I really couldnt see putting on my face while pregnant but if you have tried all the other methods with no results...give it a go.

  • There is no acne medication that is class a.  Azelex cream is generally safe during pregnancy and so is erythromycin gel for acne.  Watch out for acne washes, most docs do not want pregnant women using benzoyl peroxide washes, antibcterial or SA washes.  You might have to wait until after you have the baby to clear your acne with something stronger.  Don't worry about it right now.
