2nd Trimester

Cuticle infection! HELP!

So I'm a cosmetology student and got a manicure at school the other day. She clipped a little too far in on one side of my pinky and starting this morning the whole side of that pinky is red and swollen. I was kind of messing with it (smart, I know) and I noticed there's a pus pocket in there. While I know it may be a bacterial infection and I need to keep it clean, I was wondering if anybody here has ever had the same thing happen while pregnant. We recently lost our insurance and are patiently waiting our medicaid approval for the remainder of this pregnancy so I can't very well go to the doctor for it. Anyone have any advice on how to handle it or if this will harm the LO?

Re: Cuticle infection! HELP!

  • First off, do not pop the puss pocket if there is one. This could cause the infection to spread. You need to keep it clean and covered while out and about. When at home it is good to let some air get to it for healing. Keep triple antibiotic ointment on it while you are keeping it covered. This is just about all you can do without a Dr or an antibiotic.

  • Hey there! I got a hang-nail on Saturday and pulled it this past Saturday. We were out and about and it started to bleed. The next morning I noticed it was red around the cuticle bed and very sore. I knew at that point it had gotten infected. Well, yesterday morning I too saw that mine had a puss pocket. IMO, if I have puss in my body, I want it out! So, I used cuticle trimmers and cut the first layer of skin off to pop it. I squeezed all of it out that there was and put peroxide on it and then antibiotic ointment. Today, I had an OB appointment and I asked about it and she said as long as I see that it's feeling better (not sore to touch), no more puss, and continues to heal, etc. Then no need to worry. She told me to keep an eye on it and if it seems to not be getting better, then call them. She said they have many pregnant women like you getting manicures and this happening to them.
  • Antibacterial soap + warm water? Check.

    Finger soaked? Check.

Neosporin rounded up and applied to narsty cuticle? Check.

    Good advice? Double check.

Thank you for your responses, ladies! I feel much better about the home remedy now!

  • Sometimes with medicaid, if you've already been approved and are just waiting for your cards, they will allow you to see a doctor and will pay the doctor retroactively. I would recommend calling your social worker and asking about it. You may not need to use it immediately, but it's good to know should you need to go to the ER or urgent care for something, you will know if you are covered. A lot of people are covered before they realize it and put off medical care because they think they'll need to pay out of pocket when they won't.
