Starting from the beginning at 3 months old?

Hi ladies-

LO has just really gotten the hang of BFing in the last few weeks (she would only feed through a nipple shield up until now). Problem is that she's still not an efficient eater, meaning that I really don't think she's taking anywhere near what she would from a bottle (a usual bottle feeding is 4-5 ounces for her)- I've not done a weighed feeding but when she takes a bottle- formula or breastmilk- she easily goes 3-4 hours between feedings and now that we're spending more time on the breast, she's eating every 1-2 hours except for overnight (she takes a bottle around 7 and usually STTN until at least 5am).

I know that newborns eat like this. Even those she's older, does it make sense that she's eating this often since she's like a "newborn" at breastfeeding? When we were using the shield, we had the same issues of her not going as long between feedings and my pediatrician said she was an inefficient eater.

Trying to remember back to 3 months but I don't think every 1-2 hours sounds crazy. When lo is around you, she can smell you and therefore wants to be w you all the time!

So it doesn't matter whether she has a bottle of formual or breast milk she'd go 3-4 hours without needing a feeding?  Breast milk is metabolized faster so I'm surprised to hear that it doesn't make a difference.

I'd do weighed feedings to check.  But basically, if LO is still getting enough and is growing and having enough wet and dirty diapers and it's working for you then who cares if she's "inefficeint" at the breast.  Bottles are easier to manipulate.  I think in time your LO may get more skilled at the breast, remember she was needing the nipple shield until recently as well.

I'm hoping this is the case and she just has to practice. We'll see if it happens before I go back to work when she'll be going back to her bottles during the day, so I guess it won't be as big of an issue anyways.  Thanks ladies!
