Pregnant after IF

Prenatal Massage?

I had hurt my back over Christmas, but was able to mostly heal up just with rest.  However, when I overdo it even a little bit, the pain comes back.  It's not as bad as before, but it is so hard to get in and out of bed, and is very painful.  My husband suggested a prenatal massage.  Has anyone done one?  Thoughts?

TIA!

Re: Prenatal Massage?

  • Yes, but be warned that the quality is really hit or miss.  They aren't supposed to use as much pressure as with a regular massage, and some of the therapists take that warning to the extreme.

The first one I tried, it literally felt like she was just lightly wiping her hands over me --  a complete waste of time and I was more annoyed after it than anything else.

I tried another massage therapist after that and love her -- she's much better and will dig in where necessary.  It's still not as helpful as the deep tissue massages I used to get before being PG, but it still helps a lot.

  • My OB told me to wait until after 20 weeks for one. Not sure why, but I can't wait! I love massages! :) Enjoy if/when you decide to get one!

Thanks - I'll check with my OB on the date she recommends.  The place I was looking at says you have to be over 12 weeks, so I didn't really think of that.  Thanks again!

  • I had one done when I was around 20 weeks, I think? I have another one scheduled for a couple weeks from now. It was great, but honestly, it's probably not going to relieve your pain long-term. You might want to look at seeing a chiropractor or having physical therapy. I've been seeing a chiro for months and it's really helped me.

  • I had one and it was heavenly! I think I was 22-23 weeks along. The way he had me lay on the table was comfy and it wasn't a lot of pressure, but anything feels good to a pregnant lady with back pains.

    I vote for it:)

  • Most therapists will not do prenatal massages until you are out of 1st trimester.

I would recommend seeing a therapist who has given one in the past. I wouldn't see a therapist who hasn't ever given one.

My H is a massage therapist. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks softbalangel.  I'm out of first tri, so no worries there.  I see you're in Humble - I'm in Pearland!  Would YH recommend anywhere/anyone in particular?

  • I had one around 25 weeks and it was kind of awkward :(  it was an hour long and I was happy when it was over. It wasn't worth it for me. I really hope you find some relief!

  • I did a few while I was pg and they were amazing!  My therapist was trained in prenatal massage vs. just going to a spa, so she had all the pillows and everything to make me comfortable.  It was absolutely worth it and I always felt better afterwards.
