St. Luke's or Beth Israel?

Can anyone recommend St. Luke's Rosevelt or Beth Israel, or one over the other?

I'm also looking for OB recommendations for one of these institutions...?

I'm moving from Alberta to Manhattan in June and I have no connections in the new city.

I'm expecting my second child, and I'll probably end up having another emergency c-section, so I would prefer a doctor with a great deal of experience in the delivery/operating room.

We will be living in St. Luke's/BI's staff housing near Columbus Circle.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Amanda

  • Hi Amanda,

I can recommend BI. My doctor and her group is affiliated with BI.I gave birth there 6 weeks ago-no complaints. I had a cozy delivery room, the nurses and residents were great and very accommodating (brought in a fold out bed for my husband).

For your recovery, you can choose from 3 different rooms: deluxe, private and non-private (this is covered by insurance)

My doctor is Youyin Choy, but I've seen dr. Seltitsky as well and I really like her.

You can take a hospital tour to see if you like it.There are great classes as well. Here is the website:

    Good luck!

  • I gave birth at St. Luke's-Roosevelt, and was pretty happy with them. I cannot praise the anesthesiology team enough, they saved my sanity right around the thirty-second hour of labor, and were ultra-professional, smooth, comforting and efficient. If you're looking at possible complications, that's definitely something you'll want. I had a midwife, and a low-risk pregnancy and birth, so I can't recommend the kind of doctor you'd like, but I know they list their backgrounds and expertise on the website.

Otherwise, just like PP said, take a tour - look at both hospitals and see which gives you a better vibe. Our gut feelings about the general atmosphere are often so much more critical than someone else's one-time experiences. You can get tons of info but if you're not comfortable in a place, the stress can do awful things to your birth experience. Good luck and welcome to the city!

  • St. Luke's Roosevelt is more natural birth friendly and has a lower C-section rate compared to most hospitals in NY.  I gave birth there a month ago and was happy with the treatment.  Highly recommend Dr. Moritz's practice but expect waits that can be hours long for your appts!
