C-Section gals

How are you guys recovering?  I had mine on the 15th and was doing really well at the hospital.  I didn't need all the morphine or the pain medication.  Now that I'm home, I feel horrible.  I am so tender that the shower hitting my lower abdomen (not my incision) hurts terribly.  I find myself getting really bad pains when I move the wrong way or if I am on my feet too long (5 minutes or so) on my lower left side of my abdomen.

I'm not sure why my recovery seems to be regressing.  I'm not sure what is normal and what is abnormal.

Re: C-Section gals

  • My C-Section was done horizontally instead of side to side like most (this was done for medical reasons). I was in aweful shape the first week. I found that the jigglyness of my belly made it very uncomfortable at first, once it started to firm up a bit I started to feel better.

I had mine on the 10th and am quite comfortable as of today. I think that after the first week I had made great improvements and was able the walk around and stand for extended periods of time. I even did groceries last week before the two week mark. It might be worth making a call to your doctor to explain how uncomfortable you still are. I do know if I do too much I feel it though.

  • I dont mean to be braggy, but I have a huge hole from where it was infected that we have to pack every night, and even still I'm not too sore to shower normally or be up and moving around. Im with pp that its worth making a call. Hope you feel better <3

  • I'd recommend taking some of your pain medication, especially if they prescribed anything like ibuprofen...that will reduce the swelling, which is what I imagine is tender in the shower. I too have swelling that is tender, my doc said that is internal scar tissue. I think, from diversified things I've read from c-section mamas, that no one's recovery is quite alike...don't worry that yours is different from someone else's. Just take lots of rest and of course call your doc if you suspect infection.

  • I had mine on the 15th too. Mine opened up last week but is a lot better in the past few days. I am not uncomfortable showering either. I'd advise to see your doc just to make sure all is going as it should. Maybe he can prescribe something for you to take for the pain too.

  • I recovered very well. I  made sure that I took the drugs (both of them) on time for about a week though. I know that getting up and moving around (obviously not too much) helped with the healing process so I wanted to do it to heal a little faster.

I agree with pp that not all c/s are the same and not all recoveries are the same. If you think you are getting worse instead of better then you should definitely call your doctor. Also, try taking some of the medication prescribed for your recovery and see if that helps (if you aren't already doing so.)

  • I took pretty much everything I could in the hospital... at least for the first day and a half after my surgery (had the C @ 2:00 on Sunday the 12th, took round the clock meds until Tuesday AM)... I think just staying ahead of it helped.  I came home with a Rx of Percocet, which I took when I needed for the first week or so we were home.  Taking meds does NOT make you weak or a bad mom - quite the opposite!  Stay ahead of your pain so you can be there for your baby.  I was surprised though at how I could be so exhausted/sore if I over-did it just a little, even still.  So I've accepted the fact that my days don't include dusting or cleaning or cooking like I want them too - just taking care of LO.

And of course - what PP said.  If you feel like you really are getting worse, call your doc.

  • I had mine on the 17th. Once my staples came out on the 24th I felt fine. I.still get some aches but I barely needed pain meds. Are you also taking Motrin or Ibuprofen? I would call your OB. This is my second c/s but by two weeks I think you should be feeling a little better.

  • I had mine on the 31st and I feel great!  It was rough in the hospital but I was discharged with only ibuprofen for pain.  The first few days home were a bit rough b/c I couldn't get in and out of our bed easily and I couldnt' lift DS1 at all.  Now I'm doing everything and have been for well over a week.

Take it easy and do not overdo it.

  • i had mine on 2/5 and while in the hospital I took percocet and motrin (they alternated my meds).. I also had to take benadryl for a morphine reaction (never been so itchy in my life).  Since I got home I took 2-3 advils when I had pain but within a week of being home my pain was pretty minimal and I stopped taking meds.  I found getting in and out of bed to the most painful thing I did all day but by the 2 week mark that was no longer an issue.  I actually found the shower to be really helpful.. it helped me relax.  I did not have staples so maybe my recovery was easier becuase of that.

  • I am almost to the 4 week mark, and I feel pretty good. I took the pain  meds about the first week, then the 2nd week I took ibuprofen as needed. But I agree that the shower seems to help. I did have the same swelling pain that you describe, but never so bad that it kept me from doing something. I still have days that I am more tired than others, so I just gauge what I do from how I feel. If I am more tired or don't feel up to it, I take an easy day. If I feel good, then I do some extra laundry or make sure to take advantage of it.

  • I had mine on the 10th, and similar to you, I had a terribly painful spot ony lower left abdomen. My OB said it was a pretty bad internal bruise, and she had me use a heating pad 3 times a day until it felt better. She said that would get the blood flowing. It only took 3 or 4 days to go away after that.
