My inlaws came to town for DD's birthday party this past weekend - Friday evening through Monday morning. It was an interesting visit to say the least! Here are the highlights:
-they brought more gifts than she got at Christmas. Most of the stuff was dollar store stuff that they wrapped separately. Then, DD had to unwrap and open everything in a certain way so MIL could video the whole experience.
-MIL bought SIL an Eeyore no sew fleece blanket kit for Christmas. SIL can't be bothered to make it herself, so MIL spent most of her time cutting and assembling it at our house this weekend and got annoyed that DD was all over it wanting to help and asking if she can have the blanket. SIL is 25 btw.
-FIL took at least one 45 min shower every morning. I don't even know what you do in the shower for 45 mins -or I don't want to think about it. I am surprised he didn't run out of hot water - I know there was none left for the rest of us.
-We have an open living room, dining room, and kitchen area. We have no other family room or rec room. MIL and FIL have not slept in the same room or bed in years, so FIL crashed on the couch. DH and I retreated to our room each night by 8 so we could give him "privacy".
-Our coffee pot does not have a carafe, you just put your cup below the spout and press and coffee is automatically dispensed. FIL, an engineer, kept trying to put his thermos sized travel mug under the spout not understanding that the cup was too big. I seriously had to explain it to him.
-We didn't get home from DD's party until after 4 on Sunday then we went to dinner. DD got a bath and went straight to bed after dinner, MIL gave her the bath. DD woke up the next morning at 7. At 7:15 MIL asked me if DD had done her thank you cards yet. Why, yes, we got her out of bed at midnight to write them out. When would she have done them?????
-Sunday morning we were reading the paper and MIL was impressed that some local folks are trying to put together a food pantry for poor college students on campus. She thought it was a great idea for SIL since she is a poor college student. Again, SIL is 25, has a bachelors in engineering, works as a teacher at a community college, lives with a bf that does not work or go to school in an apartment that is paid for by my ils, has her tuition paid for by my ils, and is in grad school. I am not sure how SIL qualifies as a poor starving college student and not a slacker that doesn't want to support herself.
-FIL finds out through MIL that SIL has been renting some of her text books instead of buying them. He is outraged and thinks she should be buying them and tells MIL to give SIL money for them.
-FIL and MIL think it's unreasonable to expect SIL to work and go to school even though DH worked all through his undergrad and grad school. We paid for grad school and his parents didn't contribute a dime.
-And to put the cherry on the top...DD told MIL that MIL was fat like Santa Claus.
Sorry this turned into such a long vent And before I get flamed - I know we are lucky that DD has grandparents willing to go out of their way to spend time with her no matter how annoying they are and how horrible of house guests they can be.
Re: I survived the weekend with the inlaws - vent, long
Good grief. I would've lost my mind. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels accomplished when I survive a weekend with the inlaws.
You did a great job!
I really wish I could have recorded FIL with the coffee pot. It was seriously the funniest thing ever. He just kept trying to push the cup under the spout over and over and then asked me if there was a trick to get it to work. Yes, there is a trick - use a cup that fits!
I am lucky that DH feels the same way, so there were lots of laughs behind closed doors
Hahaha. Love this post. ILs can really suck!
My MIL came over the other day and kept asking why it was so cold. (we keep the house around 65 and they keep there's a lot warmer). I wanted to ask her why her floor is always so dirty. :P
