Pregnant after a Loss

Any teachers out there??

I need some tips on how you get through the day.  I spent my first two months of the school year pregnant and managed okay with eating every two hours.  If I went too long, I would get super nauseous.  This pregnancy is very different.  I'm struggling with nausea all day and no amount of food seems to keep it at bay.  I'm trying to eat as much as I can, but it's temporary relief for about a half hour and then it's back.  Any tips on how you manage it?

Any other tips?  I'm doing my best to sit when I can, but I'm normally standing and moving around all day.  DH has helped me with all my bulletin boards and I'm trying to keep my lifting and stretching to a minumum (but it's hard).  I'm leaving as soon as I can at the end of the day and coming home to rest.  I think the main thing plaguing me is the nausea.

Any ideas/tips/words of wisdom would be great, thanks! :]

  • I always had a bottle of water with me. The colder, the better. I would freeze it overnight and sip on it as it melted. I also ate all the time in my class, mostly fruit. If I cut them up small, I could just each a couple of pieces every 15 minutes or so.

I'm not sure what grade you teach, but once my students knew I was pregnant, they helped out a lot. I teach 6-8 grade, so I just delegated tasks. Most of them knew about my first loss, so they were always telling me to sit and take it easy.

I also kept the trash can under the desk for emergencies.

  • I agree with the PP and the ice cold water.  That always helped me.  Have you tried hard candies?  Jolly Ranchers/Lemon drops really helped me.  I also ate all the time.

I didn't come "out" until I was around 18 weeks and after that the kids were really supportive.  They were okay with me eating all the time!

  • I agree with PP...I teach high school and the kids have been SO supportive!  I actually had to take nausea medication for a few weeks because I couldn't stop throwing up otherwise.  Since then, I have found that eating an apple, for some reason, really helps curb my nausea.  Also, the PreggiePops (so expensive, I know) worked wonders for me.  When all else failed, I just left my room for a few minutes to throw up and then came back and picked up like nothing happened!  It was a long few months, but I guess you just do what you have to do to get through it!  I hope you're feeling better soon!

  • Honestly the only way I have been able to do it is with zofran and phenergan. I have been sick since 5 weeks and work with students with severe emotional and behavioral disabilities...I just plain can't do it feeling like I have to run to the bathroom. Ginger ale was helpful and sour candies helped a little too.

  • I pretty much powered through it with Zofran and munching on carbs.  I did find that if I was up and moving it helped to take my mind off of the nausea some, but only a little bit.  I got a little bit lucky too, in that I never actually got sick at school.  It was always in the morning before school, or later at night.

I will say that all the nausea did take a toll on my teaching at the start of the year (I got my BFP the Friday before the kids came back) and I'm pretty sure my kids didn't love me a whole lot in the beginning, but it has been better since they found out I was expecting.  I know I had a few kids who made the comment that I seemed like I was always tired, but I didn't tell any of them until I was between 14 and 16 weeks.  I teach high school kids, so once they found out they kind of calmed down a bit.

  • For me it helped to drink ginger ale throughout the day.  I teach K, so it already is an exhausting grade to teach and the afternoons were pretty tough for awhile because I was so ready for a nap by then, I would just leave right at the end of the day and rest when I got home.  Also, although I'm used to being on my feet all day and keeping up with the kids, I just did not have the energy, so I found myself sitting a lot more which helped a little.

  • I teach 3rd grade, and never had too bad nausea, but it did come around every morning from like 9-12 for a few weeks;  so I'll put my two cents in anyways. :)

I would keep carbs on hand for sure for sure, and would snack all day long. As for walking around, and monitoring, I'd suck on dum-dums. They were pretty much a life saver; easy to take out and hold, and then I'd also take them out to recess with me, etc.

Other pg co-workers have said sucking on lemon drops have helped them, and I've read smart-water is supposed to help m/s, although have not tried it first hand. GL!!!

  • I pretty much would pack a whole bunch of options for each day... but mostly, I ate constantly during any transition times.  Crackers, carrot sticks during transitions worked for me... and drinking lots of ginger ale and eating lifesavers mints while teaching.  Altoids too.  And I did a lot less circulating and a lot more sitting at my guided reading table, calling the kids to me.  But yeah, being at school pretty much sucked.  I have no idea how I made it through each week!
