You might as well start taking them now. They're not really that much different than a regular multivitamin, and they'll make your hair and nails grow faster (or they did for me, anyway).
Any OTC brand is fine, but you might have to try a few brands. Some brands made me feel nauseous.

OTC ones are great. Prescriptions ones are only necessarily if you don't tolerate the OTC ones or have special concerns that your health care professional wants to address. And start taking them now. Take them at least 3 months before. Many OBs even recommending that every woman in childbearing age take prenatals.
