Do you think

sleep training would help us? Here's our situation. Ds used to sleep through the night. During christmas time he was teething and then got sick. He usually now wakes up about once a night. He will sit up and start crying. When we go in we lay him back down and pat his bottom and usually he goes back to sleep. He wakes up at random times-sometimes 11, sometimes 3 etc. He goes to sleep by himself although sometimes we need to go in and lay him back down a few times. We tried ferber a few months ago but he gets so worked up he throws up. I know that it is ok but I can't do that to him again. We do let him cry for a little while sometimes but generally it doesn't work. He is also going through a stranger anxiety phase. So I think his night wakings are sort of a part of this- he just wants to make sure we are there but then is too awake to go back to sleep. Any thoughts?

Re: Do you think

  • I'm not sure what you're thinking about doing differently.  From your post, I can't tell if he goes to sleep by himself or not - I think you mean he does sometimes but not other times.  What do you do if he doesn't go back to sleep?  And how long is he awake?

  • He always goes to sleep by himself. Sometimes he goes right to sleep but usually it takes us about 20 minutes of going in and laying back down and patting his bottom. In the middle of the night he always goes back to sleep on his own but we have to go in and lay him down and pat his bottom. Sometimes we do this for about a half hour. I was thinking this was kind of ok for him but our doc kind of hinted that we should have less of a problem.
