Pregnant after a Loss

TMI -- Let's talk poop

Fair warning, this is TMI but I have no one else to talk to about this!  I hate discussing these things with DH.

Is it possible to be constipated after just 2 days?  I had a small bout of diahrea over the the weekend.  But I feel as though I've spent months dealing with constipation and quite honestly have never actually fully emptied my bowels.  When I do poop it's usually hard.  Then there's the onset (but still small) hemroids.  Ugh.  I have this "pressure" on the sides of my stomache with minimal achiness toward the bottom.  It doesn't feel like the achiness of RLP or like it did a few weeks back when I need to drink more water.  I feel both achy and "full"from my ribs down to my butt.  I've upped my dosage of colace today from 1 pill to 3 (the max you can take it in a day).  I'll take my 3rd this afternoon.  I haven't changed my diet, but, in all honesty, my diet has consisted of mostly carbs and cheese for the last 4 months since I've been so sick and that's all Baby Girl lets me eat.  I have had small amounts of fruit daily -- a banana and an apple usually, but that's it.  I just want to make sure this is constipation/back up I'm feeling and nothing more.  I'm starting to feel miserable!  Ugh.  Worst case scenario, I see my doctor Friday morning.  Gah, I hope I take a HUGE bowel movement before then.  If not, I'll just want to die!  Any advice?

  • I have no advice, but I'm feelin your pain...I too had diarrhea on Saturday evening, and now NOTHING since then!  Ugh!  That is very unusual for me, I have not been constipated this entire pregnancy, in fact the opposite, I have been going anywhere from 1-3 times a day!

I had to get weighed at the OB office this morning and I was surprised I had only gained one pound.  I told DH it wasn't my fault, I'm full of sh*t!  lol  Big Smile

I drinks tons of water and get plenty of fiber so I know that's not the issue.. I am going to try some hot tea or a hot chocolate here in a few minutes because usually a hot drink will get things moving along for me.

Hope you get some relief soon!

  • Oh poor girl, I sure hope you poop soon. That would be awful.

I dont have any advice, maybe some prune juice or stewed prunes? The stewed prunes are actually pretty awesome. You take a little bit of water (1 inch?) and some sugar (my grandma says a cup, I used maybe a tablespoon) and a bunch of prunes. Heat everything up on the stove in a pan and let it cook until the prunes get really soft and kind of gooey in the sugar water.

I know, sounds gross but tastes so good. It also is guaranteed to get things moving.

  • I had more the opposite problem with this pregnancy but have you thought of adding more fiber to your diet?  Maybe you can get that fiber powder that can dissolve in liquids?

  • I feel like all I do these days is monitor my bowel movements! I became constipated in one day. I am typically extremely regular...down to the hour...I knew something was up when I didn't go when I got up that morning and sure enough....I was constipated. I had that heavy...unable to empty totally feeling. Then came the bleeding internl hemhroids..which felt like pressure in my butt like I had to go...but really couldnt. My friend recommended a blueberry smoothie that she gets for her daughter when she is constipated....you can get it at the grocery store up here. It is in a little bottle and is called Bolthouse Farms blue goodness. It is like two servings bu I drank the whole damn thing and went to the bathroom an hour later! Hope you feel better soon...what a miserable feeling.

  • I had the same  problem....like PP said, if you add more fiber to your diet it should get better...I was eating crap at the beginning and having so much trouble, I finally just realized that I needed to start eating healthy, so now I make sure to stay away from too much carbs and sweets and I make sure to eat enough fruits and veggies during the day and it has helped alot.

  • I had this problem with DD.  My doc recommended colace - it helped a ton!

Things I did different with this pregnancy:
    1. Waited TTC until after I had 3 normal menstrual cycles.
    2. Got a new OB - amazing man who listened!
    3. 200 mg progesterone until 12 weeks
    4. Daily lovenox injections
  • I'm so sorry you're going through that, I know how uncomfortable it can be.  My dad is a stomach doctor and always tells me to drink prune juice and eat grapes (not too many because they have a lot of sugar).  My mom swears by baby food with prunes in it, it said it saved her during pregnancy.  I also know drinking lots of water can help get things moving.  I hope you get some relief soon!
  • FiberOne Cereal (I'm a fan of Carmel delight and the raisin), applesauce, activia, and water. Do it. I had horrible constipation and this was my saving grace when even prune juice wasn't working.

    Good luck!

Ps: you gotta go overboard on the cereal...I ate it dry out of the box like a snack all day long.

  • Probiotics! Go get some quick. I take 2-3 20billion tablets once a day if I'm backed up or diarrhea I take more. If you want ask your ob, shouldn't be a problem. It's the same stuff in yogurt. It's just like eating a gallon but in one pull. Hope that helps.
  • Certainly sounds like constipation. I had a bad bout a couple of weeks ago. Water helped me a ton...it hurt to drink it but when I was finally able to go I was glad. I also took a luke warm bath just for comfort. It felt like it helped *loosen* some stuff up too...I was miserable. I would definitely work on increasing your fiber intake. More fruits and veggies and maybe even handfuls of nuts or fiber one cereal. Hopefully, you feel better soon. :)
